Your Words Are Your Own Product?

As a writer, we know that there are so many people who trust our words and depend on our skills to tell stories, cause change, and inspire people to think. The fact is that public speaking is one of the most important aspects of being a writer. Public speakers have their own set of anxieties and fears which can cause them to come across in less than the best light. But it's not only public speaking that can make writers nervous; fear also plagues them when they're trying to get published or accepted into publishing houses. As you might imagine, this anxiety about what others might think of us causes many writers not only worry but also feelings of shame or inadequacy. But what if we could take away this fear and replace it with one word?
What if we could create a different way of looking at the fear that writers often live with in regards to their writing and the potential of others judging them? What if there was some way to reduce the negative effects of public speaking which can affect our writing and instead increase our ability to get published, build readership, and connect with our audience?
There is. It's called: Your Words Are Your Own Product .
This phrase gives us permission we were once denied. It enables us to let go of that feeling that we're putting ourselves out there for everybody to see, comment on, critique, or judge. And when we go through this process of feeling like we've been judged, in some cases it can make us doubt ourselves and therefore our writing. It can cause us to feel inadequate and unable to continue the writing career we hoped for.
After all, if other people think that what I write is no good then why should I keep doing it? Why should I keep writing if no one is going to listen or care? This is a common thought among writers which results in them stopping their careers before they even really get started.
The phrase: Your Words Are Your Own Product gives us permission to be ourselves. It's a metaphor that allows us to see our words as our product. That is, our writing is just like any other product that we buy and sell in a marketplace. It's no different than a book, a vacuum cleaner, or even an old car. All of these products get produced in anticipation of finding customers who want to buy them. And once we make that sale it means someone out there likes the product enough to exchange their hard-earned cash for it.
While we might not think of writing in this way, it's helpful to do so. It gives us the permission we need to get our words out there for people to see. The truth is that there are already plenty who enjoy what we write and want us to continue doing so. Especially if you already have a following or a mailing list of customers who buy your books. So using this new metaphor allows us to let go of that fear that holds many writers back from publishing or even writing in the first place.

Conclusion
Indeed, we want to get our writing out into the world and you don't need to be afraid to do that. In fact, your words are your own product. You just have to be willing to take the risk of putting them out there and letting others know what it is you're trying to say.
