A blog post about why having a lot of traffic on your website is not the best goal for most businesses.

It has been said that traffic is the only relevant metric in business. This begs the question; Why do we continue to base our success solely on how many people are visiting our website? Some businesses may work well with a goal of getting as many visitors as possible, and this might work for them. But for most, it is not the best practice.

Reasons for traffic should be differentiated. First of all, having a lot of traffic is not always good, nor does it translate to a lot of conversions or sales. Why? Because you may simply have too many people visiting your website with no real interest in buying anything from you. If you're a brick-and-mortar business, people might just come to check out what you offer and then leave without making any purchases. You want to convert these visitors into paying customers -- not just get as many people as possible without regards to whether they're going to buy anything or not.

So if traffic is not the most important thing to focus on, then why do businesses care so much about it? Well, they actually don't. If your goal is simply to get a lot of traffic, there are tons of ways to get it. But if you want actual customers who will spend money with you, then this means you need a different approach. There are far more effective things to do than just blindly focusing on getting traffic -- things like creating relevant content that attracts people who are interested in buying from you. Valuable information doesn't instantly translate into more visitors though...
