First of all, what is a "WebSense"? WebSense is an open-source software application developed by a team based out of University of North Texas. WebSense allows users to track and manage their Windows computers remotely over the Internet. It can be used for free, with no need to install any software or hardware on the computers being managed, which can greatly simplify IT management tasks that typically require dedicated network infrastructure. It's really easy to setup, and it comes with a lot of features that make it stand out from other remote monitoring applications.

WebSense is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, for both Windows and Linux.

It can be used to monitor computers on either a local network or the Internet, through a Web browser interface or an optional client software. Its features include system resource usage trend reporting, disk space usage statistics, remote control of an installed desktop environment, an event log viewer, multiple remote control terminal sessions per machine, and can even send you an e-mail when something important happens on the computer being monitored.

WebSense, in its current version, runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003 and Linux OS. It also runs on Microsoft's latest platforms, Windows 8 and Server 2012. Also, as of version 2.0, WebSense supports Apple Mac computers too.

An intelligent remote monitoring system is built to serve its users by giving them the information they need when they need it; without having to worry about any of the IT management or IT monitoring headaches that typically come with them. We all know what life is like when we can't even seem to find the time to fix a simple problem that we should have been able to fix years ago, let alone fix things while we're still here.

WebSense is built to simplify IT management and monitoring tasks as much as possible. It's meant to give you the info you need, when you need it, so that you can work within your comfort zone.

The University of North Texas began building WebSense in early 2012 by using NCSA's Open Source university program. WebSense was first used in classrooms and labs at the University of North Texas for Windows desktop monitoring over the Internet; and later, Linux machines were also supported.

Conclusion

WebSense is an Open Source application that is available for both Windows and Linux computers. The WebSense team consists of students and faculty members from the University of North Texas. User authentication, support for multiple users, and custom reports are just a few of its many features.
