The number of libraries worldwide has been steadily increasing over time at an unprecedented rate. According to one of the world’s largest library executives, there were approximately 1.4 million libraries at the end of 2009 and that number is expected to rise to over 2 million by 2015. While this increase is definitely impressive, many people still wonder if libraries are still necessary in today’s digital age.

In order to answer this question, we need to understand why there are so many libraries in the first place. The most basic reason for having a library is to facilitate a place where people can go and get access to information that they can’t always get through their own devices or services. Libraries are accessible to everyone and offer an array of resources that are vital to the growth and development of a community. Libraries can also be a great way to stimulate the community by allowing for people to go out and interact with others.

On top of all this, libraries often contain resources that you just can’t find on other sources, such as books, magazines, journals, newspapers, etc. In fact, New York City is home to one of the largest library systems in the world – The New York Public Library – which contains over 11 million items from over 14 different collections including special collections such as The New York Times Digital Archive. Other libraries can be found in many different cities around the world, all of which are consistent with a similar purpose. This fact is important for understanding how important libraries are in today’s information-based society.

While libraries are still necessary, they are definitely not as crucial as they were before. To understand why this is the case, we need to examine how the digital age has changed our way of life and our view on information. There was a time when books were indispensable and every household had some sort of library and that hasn’t changed at all. But it’s true that there are less and less paper books being printed. Instead, digital books and other forms of electronic media are increasingly replacing traditional paper. In fact, in 2012, the number of digital books circulating was around 300 billion while the amount of physical book circulation was only 42 billion.

This means that a lot more information is now available through digital sources instead of paper. This change in information has had some significant effects on libraries. The first key change is how people access information – through their devices or online resources instead of the library. As a result, people can now get access to more information at a faster rate by simply going online instead of going to a library and searching for what they want to read on shelves. This change is more apparent for young people, who lack the funds to purchase a library card and as a result they are more likely to go online.

Furthermore, the Internet has completely changed how libraries are funded. The internet allows libraries to have much higher circulation rates of books and other resources while having fewer of these items on hand because many of them can be accessed online. This has allowed libraries to have smaller collections with less need for storage space and personnel but still maintain a large circulation rate.

So, while libraries still provide access to information that could not be obtained anywhere else, they’re no longer as necessary as they used to be due to the rise in digital media use.

Thus, when examining why libraries are still important in today’s digital age, it is important to consider that the “digital age” is a relatively recent phenomena. Libraries were already able to provide a great amount of value before the rise of digital media and they are still an important institution in many different communities.
