How to Start Your Own Article Directory

Recently, in discussions on this site, I came across a question about whether there was anything out there that could help people build their own online encyclopaedia or article directory. The answer is yes - unless you want to spend thousands of dollars on expensive software.

In fact, you can do it yourself if you really want to. Here's how:

1. Find a domain name for your website.

You will need this to be able to create an account with an internet hosting service. By default, if you are a beginner and choose one of the more popular free services (such as Yahoo!, Geocities or Tripod) these will come with a pre-determined domain name which you can't change - in other words, something like 'myfreehost.com'. And no, you can't change it. So you will need to use an alternative service.

This may sound like a lot of trouble but it isn't really - there are plenty of free services out there, and if you just want to build one small site the chances are that you can find one that won't cost you anything. My personal favorite is 000domains.com, but there are others - just Google 'free website hosting'. I've also used iPowerWeb for years without any problems but their free options have become quite limited in recent times, so I can't recommend them anymore. That's why I prefer the free services.

2. Get an account with an internet hosting company.

This is the most important step, because it is here that you will have your domain name and website keys. After that, you can go ahead and create your website yourself - and we'll do just that in a minute!

If you are absolutely stuck for ideas about web hosts then you may want to consider buying your own domain name so you can choose it yourself (for example, my own domain name is 'yourfreehostingblog').

Conclusion

There you go. Now, if you're still reading at this point, it's probably because you have a genuine interest in building a website. I used to be just like you - few people have the time and patience to learn about web design or development. These days, however, there is so much support out there that it really is possible for anyone.
