Getting the Most Out of Your Email Service

The world of personal email is constantly changing. What was a relatively simple setup in the early days of the web, is now a scarily complicated affair requiring effort and dedication to keep on top of things. So to get ahead and avoid serious complications, check out our quick guide for getting the most out of your email service!

Email marketing is the new frontier of advertising and customer service. It’s inexpensive, yet its returns are often higher than any other form of marketing. This post will show you how to make this work for you and keep your customers close.

I'll show you how to:

* Create better email content while saving time     * Increase response rates by adding images * Boost revenue with email discounts * Get more sign-ups for your newsletter or organization with "third party" referrers such as Groupon or Vogue.com * Use email to deliver your newsletter and push your content to your Facebook fans.

The post is designed for all levels of marketers: newbies and experts alike. If you've ever thought about how important creating an email newsletter can be, or if you're considering using email on a website or blog, this guide will show you how to make it happen.

Email marketing can give you a steady flow of leads that can translate to secondary customers both through the products or services on your site and the referrals people give you in their own newsletters. It's cost effective and doesn't require a large time investment—you can start every day with a fresh list instead of waiting for subscribers to come around again.

I'll walk you through how to determine if your email address has been hacked, how to prevent spams and track down what's happening with a particular message from your inbox, how to clean up your inbox with some nifty filters so that it shows only what you need it too...and much more.

Here are 17 top tips for getting the most out of your email service:

1. Change Your Password!

Before you start doing anything else, change your password! If you don't, then all your emails from now on will be sent to the hacker/spammer who has stolen it. You will need to send an email to [email protected], but this is how it's done:

a) Go to your account and click on 'Settings' (look for a little cog wheel symbol). Then select 'Change Password'. Be sure to make this a password that you can easily remember.

b) In the next screen, confirm your new password by entering it again. Then click 'Save'.

2. Check Your Junk Email Box.

If you do receive spam or phishing emails, you'll find them in your 'junk' or 'spam' box. Sometimes these emails get flagged as spam accidentally, so it's worth taking a quick look at what's there and whitelisting the good messages from the bad ones: simply select all of the emails that are marked as spam, open them up in a new tab/window and then whitelist them by clicking on the button that says 'not spam'. This will automatically move them to your inbox for good!

3. Track Your Emails.

Your inbox can get incredibly cluttered. There's no way of avoiding this - when you send emails, they'll come in as often as is necessary to be sure that you've got them all. We all know how this works...after a while, it can look like a mess! The trick is to make sure that nothing ever gets lost and that you can keep up with everything that's going on in your life through the use of email filters. These will allow you to pick and choose the emails you want to receive, or do away with them completely!

4. Investigate Spam Reports.

In order to keep your inbox free from nastiness, you may frequently need to report a spam email. The good thing about Gmail is that they'll usually be able to tell whether or not an email is spam. If you think it is, and then report it as such, they'll move it directly to the junk box where it belongs!

5. Set Up Filters.

Filters are incredibly useful when it comes to sorting out your email messages and keeping track of what's going on in your life without getting too overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that's coming at you every single day. Set up a few filters now so that you can get a handle on the situation and start to make your email work for you!

6. Investigate Social Email Addresses.

It's not just email addresses that are used for communication online - every social network from Facebook to Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus has its own unique address too. So whenever you're checking the 'from' address of the messages you're getting, don't forget to check the social networks too!

7. Check Your Email From Multiple Devices.

The world of email hacking is becoming dramatically more common. You don't want to be one of those people who finds out that their personal details have been stolen when they get a call from their bank asking them for their password. So, wherever possible, check your personal email addresses from multiple devices...phone, PC etc.

8. Check Your Personal Email From Multiple Devices.

The same advice goes for your personal email address too! This is especially important for Gmail users as it's possible to set up multiple email addresses. Though sending emails from the wrong address can be annoying, knowing that a hacker has your personally identifiable information can be even more worrying! So if you're not sure which one is right, check them both from multiple devices and keep the relevant ones active at all times by simply changing them regularly!

9. Change Your Password Often.

The cardinal rule for security is to change your password often. If you find that you're having to remember a string of random characters and numbers for each account that you have, try using a password app like Roboform rather than making it up as you go along! This will save you a lot of time and keep your accounts safe!

10. Use Two-Factor Authentication.

The best way to protect your email, especially if it's a private account like Gmail or Yahoo is to make sure that its information is protected from any possible intruders by enabling two-factor authentication . This will only allow you to login to your account from a device that you've previously authorized and make it even more difficult for anyone to break into your account and take control.

11. Investigate Your Recipients.

If you want to ensure that everything is going smoothly, take a look at the email addresses who are receiving messages directly from you (not just those who are responding). These are the email addresses that will show up in your 'sent' box.

Conclusion

Email is a fantastic way of keeping in touch with the people you care about, but it's also essential for keeping your professional life in order. You never know who is watching, but it's much better to be safe than sorry so make sure that your emails are protected and that your personal information is secure!
