French people are known for having a large number of casinos in their country. In fact, there are more french citizens who gamble regularly than those who play soccer! However, most of these gamblers do not usually come to a casino during the weekend to play cards or dice with friends, they do so when they go out for dinner on saturday night (even though some casinos now offer "dinner and casino" packages).
They're gambling at a larger scale (more money involved), and in different ways from people who frequent the sport of soccer. The sport of soccer, which is the most watched sport in France and plays a big role in french culture, is not a professional one and does not always take place on the weekends either.
On the other hand, casinos have gotten more popular over the last few years because people can now go gamble all week long rather than just on weekends. However, going to a casino is not for everyone. If you're only planning on going to gamble, consider this article as 1/2 of it: Part 2.

Les jeunes (French slang: yé-yé, young people) is a slang that means 'the young." This phrase is used to refer to the "I was born in '76" generation, which people born after 1975 are often referred to as in France. The french people have a love for their football like no other, and it's because of this that there is close to zero crime on the streets during soccer games.

The french football team was ranked 10th in the world in 2005, and is always close to earning some medals every time a big tournament takes place. Unfortunately, they didn't make it to the Euro 2008's quarter-finals. But with such a passionate and supportive group of fans behind them at all times, nothing should stop them from winning any championship.

Conclusion: In short, there are two sides to the story. While gambling may be popular in France, and while casinos are playing a bigger part in French culture and society; at the same time we can not deny that both these things can go together in order to make a "good" combination.
