4 Search engine type for your Internet business

Google is the most popular search engine for businesses, but it's not always the best search engine to use. Read on to find out more about four Google alternatives.

A quick internet search will tell you that Google is the most popular search engine for business purposes. But a quick internet search will also tell you that Google can be better or worse for your business depending on what industry you're in and how long you want your business to stay "hidden" from potential clients.

In this post, I'll outline four of my favorite alternatives which may work better for certain businesses: DuckDuckGo, Bing, Yahoo!, and Baidu.

Just as you would Google for your business, use these search engines to hunt down information about your business. Also, consider using a social media tool like Buzzstream or Hootsuite to help you monitor discussion threads about your company so that you stay up-to-date on topics that are relevant to your business.

To help you out, I've included screenshots of the results for each of the best four alternatives for each of 10 industries (you can see all of them in the image below). Click on any of the boxes in this image to see the associated search engine result.

It's also important to remember that you need to use the top results page of any search engine. On the left-hand side, you'll see a list of suggested searches which are based on the content that came up when you searched for those words in other search engines. The first two or three results aren't always better than the rest, so don't bother clicking on those.

TabG (I don't know what TabG stands for) is somewhere in between these four alternatives and I include it and a few others because I think it's an interesting alternative to consider using if you're searching for something specific that others aren't (or if you just want to explore other alternate options).

These search engines simply aren't as popular as the top three, so you may not get up-to-date results as often. If someone were to publish an article about your company on a site like Search Engine Land, for example, the post would likely be syndicated on Google and Bing within the hour.

That's another reason to monitor conversations about your business using a social media tool: you stay up-to-date with what's going on in your industry.

Note that at this point, I've only tested these search engines on desktop computers. On mobile devices, I'm not sure which would work best so you may have to experiment with a few of them until you find one that's suitable.

Search for a domain name and register it at GoDaddy.com. Domain names are like the letters of the alphabet that you can use to type a unique address on the Internet. GoDaddy features an on-line registration process that saves you time. You can register your domain name by providing only basic information such as the domain name, the email address associated with the domain name, the registrant contact email, and payment details. You can register your domain name without providing your credit card number or any other information that it would require during registration.

Once you have registered your choice of domain names at GoDaddy , you can transfer them to other registrars if you choose to do so. GoDaddy charges a fee for each domain name transfer that is processed. Domain name transfers can be processed by using the domain names or by using the website URL associated with the domain name, such as a website URL of your choice.

You may need to change your domain name and/or email address if you want to use it with another provider or if you decide to change registrars. You will need to contact GoDaddy for assistance in transferring your domain names because GoDaddy provides support only for registrants who have web hosting services at GoDaddy, not for those with only Internet hosting services.
