4 Tips on How to Treat Adult Acne

The dreaded acne of adulthood has come to haunt your skin. It is nowhere close to the smooth, clear skin of your teenage years and is more likely to be accompanied by redness, pimples, and dry patches.

Acne affects people of all ages but it can pose a particular problem for adults as they are more prone to work pressures, increased stress levels, and new life-style habits such as reduced activity levels or less sleep. In this blog post we will show you four tips that may help you get on top of your adult acne so it does not prevent you from living the life you want.

1. Reduce Your Stress Levels
Stress can worsen the condition of acne by causing your skin to produce more sebum, or oil, which can lead to clogged pores and inflamed skin. ( 1 )  To help control this problem it is important to reduce stress as much as possible in your life. A regular meditation practice combined with a healthy diet that includes regular exercise will likely help you feel calmer and more relaxed overall.
Acne is also more common amongst those who have excess cortisol running through their system, either from increasing stress levels or due to an underlying medical condition such as hypothyroidism. Reduce these through diet and exercise and you should find that your breakouts diminish dramatically.
2. Cut Down on Alcohol and Sugar
Drinking alcohol can cause breakouts due to its drying effect, with other factors such as stress or hormones also adding to the problems. A natural way to reduce sugar intake is by choosing naturally sweetened foods, such as fruit, rather than processed sugar. It has recently been noted that those who leave the white stuff out of their diet are less at risk from acne. ( 2 )  As well as cutting down on sugars and fats overall, it is a good idea to avoid pre-packaged snacks and fast food chains where possible. These tend to be nutrient-free but will still fill you up with excess calories that can lead to excess fat in your overall diet.
3. Use a Natural Remedy
If you are short on time and need to cut down on allergens then try using a mix of tea tree oil and honey with one teaspoon of oil per cup of tea. This will help to reduce bacteria growth while ensuring that you get the antioxidants from the honey which is known for its healing properties ( 3 ). A good natural remedy for troubled skin is also chamomile tea, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities ( 4 ).
4. Eat More Fibrous Foods
A diet high in fibre is extremely important to improve health in general but can have a clear impact on acne as well. Eating plenty of carrots, cucumber, and other high-fibre foods will help to flush out toxins from your body, reducing the risk of bacteria build up. Fibre also helps to fill you up until such time as your next meal is needed, which stops you reaching for snacks which are not good for acne-prone skin.
Acne is an unpleasant skin condition that can be made worse by changes to diet and lifestyle. By following these simple tips on how to treat adult acne you should find that your skin clears up a lot faster than it did before and becomes a less stressful aspect of your life.
