IT Outsourcing
"I resent the way my IT department treats me."
If you've ever uttered those words, then this article is for you. It's about what it means to be treated like a second-class citizen in your company because of outsourcing. I've been hearing these sentiments from a lot of my clients lately. The idea that they are getting the worst quality service because their IT department has been outsourced is enough to make anyone angry. But I know why people resent outsourcing so much: it makes them feel less important and devalued in their company, which in turn leads to wasted time and money for everyone involved.
IT Outsourcing is becoming increasingly popular. Due to the current economic climate, companies are seeking ways to cut costs, and outsourcing certain services is an easy way to do that. Certain functions of your company can be performed more at a lower price, and with fewer headaches, by outside vendors. That's for sure. Still, there are some service areas in your company where keeping things in-house should trump all else. Businesses need these four core elements of their operations kept in-house: - Information Technology (IT) - Human Resources (HR) - Finance - Security
These core competencies should not be outsourced under any circumstance. They are absolutely crucial to running your organization, and the loss of these four functions could have serious repercussions for your business. Your IT department is there to keep you connected to the outside world through the internet. Your HR department needs to handle making sure that employees are treated fairly and that they are happy with their job here at your company. Your finance group ensures that your company is able to function profitably and efficiently. And your security department protects all of these groups from outside threats, like cyber criminals. The loss of one or more of these groups would destroy an entire business overnight, if not sooner. These core functions must be maintained under any circumstance - no matter how desperate financial concerns might be for a company owner.
The reasons for outsourcing IT services have changed over the years. Once, it was mainly due to cost. Now, it's mainly because of a scarcity of qualified employees. One needs to be realistic when dealing with this situation. The number of people leaving the job market lately has left a lot of employers scrambling for qualified applicants to fill positions - or hiring from outside the company, rather than looking internally for these roles. In many cases, companies do not even bother to train their new hires in any of the services they'll be providing; they just hand them out an IP address and send them right out into cyber security hell with no prospecting plan at all. What's left of the IT department has to work way harder. They have to do more with less, and that is no way to treat any group of people.
It's no wonder then, why IT departments would resent being treated like second class citizens. When their time is spent on fixing out-of-date servers, installing obsolete software services, and trying to reprogram old systems so they are compatible with the new systems, it's hard not to resent this area of your company for treating you that way. It doesn't matter what your function is - if you're not getting paid properly (which you shouldn't be), then things have gone from bad to worse. In the end, companies must realize that outsourcing IT services is a bad move. If they don't have the manpower to deal with their own core competency, then it is only going to lead to poor relationships, and poor quality service for their customers. Let's hope that businesses soon wake up and realize that keeping IT in-house is the best approach for them. Otherwise, all the businesses are really doing is setting themselves up for failure.

Conclusion
In the end, outsourcing IT services is a very good way to save costs, improve efficiency, and provide quality customer service at the same time. All it takes is a little bit of forethought and some careful consideration. However, many business owners simply make the decision without thinking it through all the way. They don't consider the consequences of such a decision on their company or their employees. In many cases, they don't even give it any thought whatsoever. This can have disastrous repercussions for their business in the long run if they fail to reconsider their decisions as time goes on.
