Car Insurance For High-Risk Drivers

If you have been convicted of a driving under the influence offense in the past five years, then you are considered an "High-Risk Driver." Most car insurance companies won't write a policy for High-Risk Drivers due to the stigma and risk that such convictions pose. However, there are some companies that will allow High-Risks to drive on their policies as long as certain conditions are met. Here is how they work:

1) The High Risk driver must not be under the age of 25 and must not be 32 or older at time of application. 

2) The company must also perform further investigations into your driving record prior to issuing coverage.

3) Most companies will not offer a policy without a substantial increase in rates. 

Some of the larger insurance companies that do write policies for High-Risk Drivers include: GEICO, Progressive, Geico General, Farmers Group, Mercury Insurance and Allied Insurance. In order to find such companies you may have to contact an independent agent specializing in high risk drivers or call around to various insurance companies (in many cases these policies are not sold directly over the phones).

For example, GEICO sells High Risk Driver policies by establishing a "Safety Program" with you that consists of installing GPS tracking into your vehicle and if there are no infractions committed during that time period then they will drop your rates back down again. Some companies will allow you to use a passenger vehicle instead of a car if you have had your license revoked due to a drunk driving offense. In addition, they may require you to purchase the most basic no-frills policy (no collision, comprehensive or roadside assistance) and they will also offer discounts for SR22 bond policies.

Prior to applying for your high risk driver policy make sure that you give the insurance company all pertinent information regarding your driving record and infractions committed along with any relevant court documentation. Make sure that you do this before applying in order to avoid problems when getting insured.

Do not be discouraged if you are denied coverage by an insurance company. Other companies may offer policies for high-risk drivers or you may also qualify for a no-fault state policy which is required in the state of New York. To find a High-Risk insurance company near you either call around or contact a local independent agent who specializes in high risk driver policies.
