Acne – the What, Why and How

Acne – the What, Why and How

If you’re one of the many people dealing with acne, you know that it can be a frustrating and embarrassing condition to manage. And while you might have grown accustomed to seeing spots on your face, there are a lot of important things about acne that you may not realize.

1. Acne is skin that is inflamed and red, with blackheads and whiteheads as well as pimples.

2. The three main types of acne are acne vulgaris, which affects about 95% of people at some point in their life; acne rosacea, which usually affects the cheeks and can be very painful; and acne conglobata or pustular acne, which is rare but can lead to disfiguring conditions such as blackheads on the back of the neck, horns on the forehead or face, or even loss of vision.

3. Acne occurs more often in adults than children because hormones are involved in its development.

4. Pimples usually occur when oils and dead skin cells aggregate around a hair follicle.

5. About 80% of people have at least one pimple during their lifetime, although it is a common misconception that everybody has them.

6. The likelihood of having acne increases with age, including the likelihood of getting acne on the back of the neck, horns on the forehead or face, and loss of vision due to pustules (the term pustules refers to small round bumps on your skin).

7. For some people, acne can be triggered by stress or changes in diet and lifestyle. For others, it can be triggered by hormones relating to puberty or pregnancy.

8. Treatments for acne include topical treatments such as benzoyl peroxide, antibiotic creams, retinoids, and salicylic acid; and oral treatments such as antibiotics (tetracycline), birth control pills, spironolactone, isotretinoin or Accutane®.
