Winter is often seen as an unproductive time of year because kids are cooped up at home and adults have less outdoor activities; sidewalks are less busy and there's just not much going on outside. Winter could be a great time to work on your hobbies, especially those that get you moving. It's important to keep active during the winter months, because being active not only helps prevent obesity and heart disease, it also contributes to your overall wellbeing.

So how do we stay active in the winter? Here are a few ideas for fun and enjoyable ways to stay active at home over the coming months:

- Buy yourself a treadmill desk! Many people have begun using treadmills standing desks as an alternative to sitting all day long. A study by Dr James Levine at Mayo Clinic found that sitting still for prolonged periods of time is bad for your health, increasing your risk of heart disease, muscle degeneration and even cancer. A treadmill desk is an affordable and easy way to cut down on time spent sitting down.

- Turn walking into a game! The team at GetUp recommends setting a fitness target for the entire family, like walking 5 miles or 10,000 steps each day. You can even find maps online that will show you nearby trails or sidewalks to walk on. Be sure to keep it fun by setting up challenges and rewards, and make sure you are recording your steps with a fitness tracker so you can see how much progress you've made!

- Do more in the snow! We all know playing in the snow is great exercise, but there are other winter activities that are good for getting your heart pumping as well. If the snow is deep enough, go for a sled ride with your kids or throw snowballs. If that's not an option, try sledding hills in your neighborhood. If you're looking to get more active these winter months, there are many fun and exciting ways to stay active this winter.

- Go on a sunset run! New York City has so many beautiful neighborhoods that it can be hard to pick just one to run through during the day. Savor the beauty of the seasonal surroundings and take advantage of the chance to run through each neighborhood and enjoy some time outdoors with your friends and family.

- Look up some hiking trails nearby. If your area is covered with snow, a hike might be the perfect way to get some fresh air and sunlight. Many of the best hiking trails are actually outside the city, so if you're looking for a little adventure on your next outing, try finding a nice trail near you and go for it!

- Go sledding with the kids! Wintertime is also a great time to go sledding with the kids. Make sure you've always got a hat and scarf on hand, and be sure to wear warm clothes and some winter boots.

- Find an interesting skate park nearby. Skateboarding is a fun way to get outside in the winter, and you can easily find an indoor or outdoor skate park in your town. Some outdoor skate parks will even have bathrooms, so you don't have to worry about navigating the streets on your way home!

It's important to remember that staying active during winter months doesn't mean you should neglect your body during the rest of the year. Even if you don't have time to run, do some push ups and squats every day. If you've got the time to go for a morning run, make it happen, but don't get too caught up in the excessiveness of winter exercise – remember that it's all about balance!
