Rules for Writing

When I began writing, I didn’t know much of anything about how to be a writer. All I knew was that I loved it. The same is true for most people who have decided to venture into the world of online writing.

“I just want to write!” is a common refrain we hear from aspiring writers.

Once you decide to take the plunge, the first step is to figure out what type of writer you want to be. The next question that needs answering is, “What do I write?” If you answered this question with anything more than a short blurb on your interests and hobbies, you are in the wrong place!

The Difference Between Fiction and Non-Fiction

Although fiction and non-fiction writers have many similarities, there are also many important differences. Because fiction writers have the freedom to create an entire fictional world for their story to take place in, they have many opportunities for creative storytelling. Fiction writers can also choose to write in any genre they please.

For a non-fiction writer, the world and characters are provided by real-life events, people and places. Non-fiction writers must stick to the facts when telling a story or describing an event or place. A non-fiction story is told in chronological order so that everything makes sense. Non-fiction writing lacks the creative freedom of fiction, but this makes it easier to be precise while writing and allows for very meticulous editing later on down the line.

Just Write

When you write for someone else, such as your boss or a client, you are always going to be expected to meet certain deadlines. If you want to write for your own blog, you should consider clear deadlines as well. I have a tendency to let my writing go until the last minute, and this is a very bad idea.

If you have ever been called on in class after the bell rings, you know what I am talking about. It is extremely difficult to quickly think of something interesting or even make up an interesting lie on the spot! Therefore, it is easier to avoid thinking about deadlines by setting them earlier and writing in advance so that nothing has to be made up when it comes down to the wire.

Editing is Everything

If you are going to be writing professionally, your work must be edited before it goes public. If you know that you need to make changes to your work, you can always go back and make those changes after the fact. You don’t have that luxury with your boss or client, so be sure to have your work edited before it is published.

With a traditional publishing house, you may need to pay for an editor or proofreader because editors are not part of the publishing contract. On the other hand, if you choose to publish through a self-publishing company (if you are serious about getting paid for your work), they will provide editing services for free as part of their service package and all authors get access to their editing team throughout the writing process.

I was fortunate enough to receive incredible editing from a team at Smashwords when I published my book, The Art of Learning, and I am very grateful for that. In addition to the editing services, my editor (Katy) also helped me with proofreading as well. As you can see in the sample edits below, she caught a lot of little errors that I would have missed had I not been working with her throughout this process.

Editing Sample: Chapter 1 “Life is good”

I’ve been meaning to share this post with you for quite some time now. It’s basically one of my favourite quotes ever and it could truly be a motto for life.

“Life is good. Life is great. Life is beautiful. Life is amazing.

You can’t be mad at life, because life will always bring you a rainbow!”

― Victor Jara

If you are like me, you may have never heard of this amazing Chilean musician. I was more interested in the quote itself, so I had to find out where it came from. Apparently the origins of the quote go all the way back to multiple different sources and then to a book called The Magic Rainbow by Victor Jara where this quote above originates from one of his poems written in 1973 during his time in prison when he was nineteen years old: (http://www.victorjarasite.net/victor-jara-poems.) I’ve always been a huge fan of Victor Jara, so discovering this quote he is known for really brought a smile to my face.

Style: This post will be written in the first person narrative using the present tense.

Structure: The structure of this post will be based on the following formula: (Title), (Introduction), (Body Worksheet), (Conclusion). I will put my worksheet in the middle of this exercise as I already had one made for my Clean Eating for Beginners post. This is also useful for me to know what things need to be changed or added as I write my posts from now on.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this post will be based on the following sentence: Life is good. Life is great. Life is beautiful. Life is amazing.
