Sometimes it is easy to fail but hard to succeed or not see the opportunity when it is presented itself. You can tell that you have succeeded when you take responsibility for your own actions and start following your dreams and goals. Actually, it is not that hard once you get the motivation and direction to do so.
I had an interview with a company yesterday. The representative called me this morning to tell me that I have been selected for the position. Their human resource department told me that they received a lot of applications but they feel that I am the best choice because my experience and credentials matches their position requirements very well. I was so happy when he told me the news that I started jumping up and down like a little school girl. So, what did I do? First thing after hanging up, I called my friends to thank them for their support and guidance in this job hunting process. Then I called my mother to tell her the good news. I am sure my mother was happy to hear the news because she has been worried about me since I left my job last year.
Do you remember how your family and friends support you when you started on your career? Well, I am not going to take all the credits for being successful. It took a lot of sacrifice, hardwork and determination to get here. My family supports my decision but they do not really understand what it takes to keep a home based business running. Frankly speaking, it is challenging and overwhelming at first. I wanted to succeed at the beginning but it was so difficult to maintain a healthy balance between my family and my business. The first few months was the most challenging part of my business because I have never done this before.
While juggling family and home business, I made some costly mistakes in my business particularly on outsourcing. Entirely cutting off your expenses is not a good thing because it means that you are also cutting down your income. My budget had been limited so I chose not to hire any cleaning service because I can clean my own home. That approach backfired when I realized that keeping a clean and organized house requires a lot more time from me than what I am ready to give up.
In this post, I want to share some of the past experiences that have helped me make good decisions in my home business.
10 Tips to Succeed in Your Legitimate Home Business
Do not necessarily answer the phone when you get a call from a company. It is best if you call them back with your own comments before accepting the job offer. If you really do not have time for work, say so and tell them that you will be glad to assist them with their needs once your schedule becomes available. It is free advertisement for your business when somebody mentions your name after they talked to you on their jobs. In some cases, you can also help them find a professional services that are not too far from your business location. Do not swipe applicants' resumes and give them an interview because it will be meaningless. You only need to take a few minutes to read through the applicant's resume. If you do not feel comfortable about hiring one of their candidates, you do not have to hire them. It is easy for you to deny the job offer at this point if you like the candidate's work experience, credentials and training. It is best if you conduct phone interviews during non-office hours when your employees are busy doing other things on their own time as well.
The worst part of the business is when job applicants call you asking for the salary, benefits and other compensation that they desire. It is not a good practice to discuss money with your job applicants unless they are under your payroll. These candidates will expect to get the same salary or even more than what you offer in interviews. Do not run your home based business like a company with a huge budget because it will limit your creativity and opportunities for growth.
Do not take phone calls during meetings, lectures or any important events that require your attention. If you have to answer calls from other parties who are not related to work, turn off the ringer when you need to concentrate on what others have to say about the meeting's topic at hand. If you cannot attend a meeting, give your guests the details of the meeting and tell them to call you back later. Ask your colleagues or relatives who are going to other meetings to give you their notes on the topic at hand. Read it after they come back because you will have more understanding than if you read it alone. Consider joining a networking group that can provide opportunities to meet new colleagues, clients and prospects in a professional atmosphere. If possible, join organizations that are related to your business niche like Chamber of Commerce, MICE (Meetings Industry Conference & Exposition) and such because these organizations usually have job listings for marketing or business development positions. You can also look for job listings on internet sites like Indeed or Monster.com if necessary.
Do not engage in any activity that can endanger the reputation of your business. I have seen some people with their marketing gimmicks to attract prospective clients. Some of them send newsletters with irrelevant information while they are pretending that they are working on the client's project. Some people advertise their business services by creating fake websites that contain similar names, addresses and contacts so people can easily confuse them for actual organizations. They will also say anything about their competitors just to make themselves look good in front of prospective clients.
These are the things that you do not want to happen to your legitimate home based business because it is too difficult to regain its trust after it has been jeopardized or discredited in any way. Maintaining the confidence and trust of your clients and customers is essential because it helps to increase their patronage if you are serving them with quality work. When they start to doubt your competence, they will look for other options that can offer similar services. The best way to make sure you are dealing with professional people is by conducting background checks on each individual who works in your home based business.
Being collaborative and open minded is the key to success in any business venture. Do not expect more than what others can do for you when you have a home based business as well. Lean on your family and friends as much as you need because they understand what it takes to run a home based business.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are a lot to think about when setting up a home business. Setting up your business in your own home is the most efficient and cost effective way to start a business. You don't have to worry about hiring employees and maintaining them (since you will be doing everything alone). It is also the easiest way to increase profits by providing quality services that will make your clients happy in return. It is best if you choose the right niche so that you can provide high quality services at affordable rates. You can start out small because it is easy to build on years of experience as you work towards larger projects with bigger clients.
