 Choosing Your ID Card Printers

In this post, we are going to talk about one of the most essential components of business: choosing your ID card printers. While you may be thinking that there is no way to really make this decision because they all seem the same- you couldn’t be more wrong! There are so many options out there it can make your head spin. This is a huge expense for any company and should definitely not be taken lightly, so lets lay some ground rules on what you need to look for when deciding which printer is right for your company.

1. Hardware: Where Does It Come From? Is It Easy To Deploy And Replicate?

This is by far one of the most important factors in your decision. You’ve got to make sure that you can find a vendor who can deliver high quality hardware at a competitive price. Essentially, what this means is that when you go to print your cards, they must be able to withstand the weight of the cards, and when you pull them out of the machine they must come out there with absolutely NO bends or creases. If this is not possible, then there may be some serious quality issues that should be addressed before proceeding on. If you can, try to find a printer that comes with an in-house imaging system (software). This allows you to do the color correction, logo placement, and everything else all in one spot. This will save you money (duh) by not having to purchase expensive software packages. Many vendors offer this, but ensure that they still supply drivers for other programs (in case yours goes down or is having issues).

2. Price: Is It Made For You?

Price is another huge factor when deciding which ID card printer will be best for your business. You have to keep in mind that you will have a hard time convincing your boss to spend an arm and a leg on a printer that won’t work unless you offer them a HUGE return. That is why you need to make sure that the price you pay for reflects the quality of service, and makes sense for your company. Many companies cut corners on their printer models in order to provide cheap prices, but in the end they sacrifice quality, so be careful of this! Another thing to think about is upgrade costs. Often times companies will include all kinds of extra costs such as consumables and upgrades that can really add up quickly. Make sure these are included in your purchasing price (or at least estimated). You don’t want to be surprised after you have already purchased the printer.

3. Software: How Does It Work For You?

When considering software, you need to make sure that the company you choose provides software that is easy to use with little-to-no training at all. Some companies will provide their own software which can sometimes be more beneficial than others. However, it can also cause problems if your IT department doesn’t allow for installation of certain programs on their systems due to security purposes. Make sure the software you receive comes with an image editor (to add logos, make graphics, etc) so that your printing process is not obstructed in any way.

4. Consumables: What Can You Use?

This is another factor that can really add up in terms of pricing quickly. You need to keep in mind for any consumables you purchase, you will be paying for the long-term and not just the single use. Some consumables such as toner save money over time, however if your printing company chooses to charge you an ongoing fee per cartridge per color (instead of one large fee) then this can make a huge difference on the savings side when it comes down to the end of the year.

Now that you know how to make the most important decision for your ID card printers, it is up to you to find one that fits your business perfectly. Doing so will save you time, money, and frustration in the long run which can be extremely beneficial in the grand scheme of running a company successfully.
