A Brief Interview with the Cessna Citation X-1 Project Director

Please tell us a little bit about your background and what you do as project director.

I have been with Cessna Aircraft Company for over 32 years. I started off in marketing, where I spent several years before moving into production and technology, where I spent 16 years working on various aerostructures projects. Most recently I was the project manager for the Cessna Citation Sovereign and before that I was overall program manager for the Challenger 300 interior program, which was a very big job indeed. As you can imagine, there are very few aircraft or engines that I have not been involved with. My work has been in all aviation sectors, including commercial and private jets and military aircraft.

What made you choose to work in the aviation industry?

I always liked airplanes and was fascinated by the way they flew and how the rules of physics applied to their construction. Traveling by air was simply a way for me to visit different places around the world affecting my career choices as an engineer.

What drove you to start a new project?

I have wanted to build another Cessna Citation since leaving the business jet market in 2002 where I worked on different proprietary variants until 2009. I left to join the team that developed the Cessna's new flagship, the Cessna Citation Sovereign. Although I was very fortunate to work on a program of this importance and magnitude, I had in my mind the possibility of creating a new aircraft that would be better than anything else on the market. We learned from our mistakes and focused on what we do best – build great airplanes!

Could you please describe your initial design process?

My choices were based both on aero-structural performance but also operator functional needs. The design must look good, feel good and be capable of doing whatever it is built for – be it economy class or executive class flying.

The aircraft is fitted with three seating configurations. Can you tell us more about it?

We have three configurations to most efficiently match the customer's needs. The baseline configuration is designed for long range and has 22 seats with a greater focus on privacy. The second configuration is created for medium range and offers 12 seats in premium class seating. It provides a better experience than baseline but also can fly longer distances than economy class, which provides a great option for traveling in style without being too cramped. Finally, economy class is tailored for very short range flights and has six private seats, where travelers can unwind during their journey at the touch of a button.

How is the interior decorated?

The interior is designed with a luxurious and modern design in mind. It's very different from what most people are used to on private jets, which tend to be rather traditional. The Cessna Citation X-1 is instead fitted with a high tech look and feel, complemented by elegant decorations. The cockpit uses the latest technology, from 12" PFDs to touch screen controllers and an electronic engine display (EED). The floating console houses an eight place conference room including built in video conferencing. This includes controls, touch screen controllers but also a kitchen fully equipped with Samsung top of the line appliances and premium Nespresso coffee machines. It's a sweet place to be in, let me tell you!

How are the seats designed?

The seats are both ergonomically designed and adjustable to suit people of different sizes. Their design is very simple, enhancing the natural beauty of the aircraft's interior. They can be repositioned for maximum space or to simply offer comfort during a short flight.

The aircraft features three seating configurations. Could you please describe them?

The baseline configuration includes 22 executive class seats in a 3-2 configuration oriented toward the forward part of the cabin. All seats have a full width cabin to ensure occupants are close to each other for social interaction. Premium class is designed for longer range flights and accommodates up to 12 passengers in comfortable leather chairs that provide befitting legroom and adequate space for personal items. The six economy class seats are private and designed for shorter range flights.

Conclusion

The Citation X-1 represents a new breed of business jets. It is not a smaller version of existing models nor it is a modified platform; it is instead an entirely new concept of airplane aimed at the most demanding customers. It offers first class travel on all flights, regardless of its length or purpose, while accommodating up to 16 passengers with VIP comfort and privacy. We are incredibly proud and excited to share our vision with the world and look forward to bringing this aircraft to market.
