In the town of Plymouth, there is a parade called The Pilgrims, which takes place on the third Saturday in August. The parade was first established in 1881, but it was initiated by the Plymouth Sons of Temperance Association. This association in itself was directly responsible for getting America involved in World War I. More than 10 years later, the Plymouth Sons of Temperance Association spearheaded an effort to get a statue of George Washington erected at Plymouth Rock on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
The statue of George Washington sits at Liberty Point Park near downtown Plymouth along with statues created by sculptor Frederic Miller and painter William Faunce. The statues are dedicated to George Washington and his bravery and accomplishments, as well as the bravery of the men who landed at Plymouth Rock.
The history in Plymouth is quite interesting as there are many interesting facts about all the events that occurred during that time. One of these events was the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620. In celebration of this event, there is a parade that takes place on August third every year. This parade has been going on for over 100 years and it is one of the biggest celebrations in town. It attracts people from all over New England to Plymouth which makes it a fun experience for everyone involved.
Eventually, the members of the Sons of Temperance Association began to realize that everyone was looking more forward to the parade than they were to their meetings. As a result, they decided to turn it into an annual event for people of all ages. The first Pilgrims parade took place in 1881 and it has continued ever since with each year being more successful than the previous. One of the major contributors to this annual event is The Pilgrim Society which was created in 1887. Their goal is to preserve and publicize colonial events that occurred prior to 1790's. This platform has allowed them to do many things including putting together parades and creating monuments such as statues and gardens in towns as well as public libraries across America. Currently, the organization is still active and continues to do what it was created for.
With the support of The Pilgrim Society along with many others, the Pilgrims parade has now grown into one of Plymouth's biggest annual events along with the First Families parade and the Raisin Festival. This year, it will take place on August 3rd and it is expected to draw thousands of spectators enjoying a plethora of fun activities such as bands, floats, antique cars, marching units and much more. Each year it seems to bring something new that makes this day even more memorable than the previous. The Pilgrims are known for their determination in life and they brought that same drive with them all those years ago when they arrived at Plymouth Rock. This parade is a way for them to let all of us know that many great things are possible regardless of how big they may seem. It also helps us to remember how hard the Pilgrims worked and how hard we need to work in order for our country to be a better place. With so much support for this celebration, the spirit of the First Families will forever run through the streets of Plymouth!
