Can I Become a Transcriptionist?

A transcriptionist is responsible for listening to a recording and typing what they hear. Generally, the audio is a voice recording, but it could also be music or ambient noise. "Accredited Writers Manual for VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Audio" (PDF format) - this document provides the information a transcriptionist needs to become an accredited VOIP Audio transcriber with the Electronic Transaction Association (ETA).

In order to be an accredited VOIP Audio transcriber with the ETA, you will have to have a recording of neutral speech over the telephone line. This must be a recording that is in a format where it can be used for transcription. It does not necessarily have to be an actual telephone call. The transcriptionist simply needs to listen and type what they hear.

Conclusion - Transcripts that are created by not certified or accredited transcriptionists or in a language other than the one in which the recording was made should be avoided.

One can make an average of $75 per hour as a transcriber. The number of hours usually work out to about two hours for each audio file. 

This is much higher than typical pay for typing jobs, but that's because you need special skills to transcribe spoken language accurately. 

Transcribing requires a trained ear and listening ability along with spelling and computer-related skills.
