The Magic of Asking

 The Magic of Asking

We can't help but ask. It's what makes humans different from any other species, and it does so much for us to build connections, maintain relationships, and even just learn about the world around us. But we've all experienced those times where asking becomes more trouble than it’s worth. If you're experiencing one of those times, now is the perfect time to shake things up by unlearning some of these habits and try something new! Let's do a quick exercise on how to ask someone out in an unexpected way!

Your assignment is to write an introduction for a blog post which outlines how you came up with the concept for this piece as well as what your goal was with writing it. In your introduction, you will also have to include a few questions that help set the tone for the content you're about to write.

Questions:
1. List two unique questions that you can ask a stranger.
2. What are three steps you can take make someone feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation?
3. On a scale of 1-10, how difficult would it be for you to ask out of the person you already like?

Assemble all of your answers into one piece and then post them on Twitter as a question in 140 characters or less with #TheMagicOfAsking. Try to respond to at least five other people's questions in this way by the end of the day and then you can have the next day off from the assignment. If you don't accomplish all of that, start over on this exercise.

Also, please check in on Twitter to respond to at least five other people’s questions and let us know how it went for you!

Chapter 11. Assignment - Create a Boss Tweet

Create a Twitter post from your boss's point of view if you’re currently an employee. If you’re not, use a scenario that you can substitute your boss for.

Check out the following template:

Tweet:

#BossTweet (1-3 words)

Ask yourself questions like: What would your boss think about this? Would they be angry? Think this is stupid? Would they want to share it with their friends or coworkers? Would they feel proud, or embarrassed? Is this something that lots of people experience but never talk about?

When you’re done, post it on Twitter and include #BossTweet in the posting so we can all see how your boss would react to whatever you think is important.

Chapter 12. Assignment - Find Your Inner Author

For this assignment, you are going to set up an interview with your favorite author and interview them about the writing process. In the comments section of their Chapters page, write your questions and include a link to the author's website where they can answer.

We recommend the following website that allows you to enter questions into a form and then receives emails from authors in order to answer them.

http://askiif.com/

Here are some basic guidelines:

- In a nutshell, describe your favorite author or character.

- Tell us about the first book that you read. It can be nonfiction or fiction.

- Was there a specific scene or part of a book that you remember most?

- What's your favorite book from the series?

- What is the hardest part about writing books?

When you’re ready to post your questions, post it on Twitter using hashtag #TheMagicOfAsking and include @MathsPermian in the tweet so we can find it!

Chapter 13. Assignment - Ask for Help with Your Book

Here's another way to set yourself up for success. Instead of sending emails to strangers who may not be interested in reading your message, try asking them one time after they read it.

Here is an example of a successful one-time tweet:

#AskforHelp (1-3 words)

You can also include links or hashtags on your tweet so we can find your message.

Chapter 14. Assignment - Ask for Help with Your Job Search

Another way to set yourself up for success is to ask for help in your job search. A lot of things could go wrong if you're not being specific enough in the way you are asking people for help.

Let's say you are looking for a job and you're not sure how to describe yourself when hiring managers ask for your job title.

Ask yourself questions like:

What is the main skill that I'm bringing to the table?

What could I be paid to do?

What is my job description at my dream job?

Once you have answered those questions, come up with five tweets that will help others understand what you can do for their business. Here are some tips:

Use a unique hashtag #JobSearchTag in your tweet.

Include @MathsPermian in your tweet so we can find it easily.

Include a URL that links to your LinkedIn profile in your tweet.

When posting your tweet, don't forget to include #JobSearchTag in the post.

Chapter 15. Assignment - Write a Tweet That Boosts Your Brand

Write a tweet that is aimed at increasing the exposure of your brand and place it on Twitter.
