The Art of Selling
Selling is perhaps the most difficult job in business. But it’s also one of the most lucrative without spending a lot of time and money. This blog post will provide some tips on how to sell more effectively, both online and off, with seven specific strategies.
There are many different kinds of selling, but there are a few universal truths every salesperson needs to know:
-Know your product or service well and answer questions as needed. If you don't have experience with your product or service, consider getting a mentor who is already working within that industry. Someone who has been doing this for years can give you a wealth of insight into what works and what doesn't within their field.
-Personal selling is about being genuine and authentic throughout the sales process. Be yourself, even if that means taking a few sheepish glances at the mirror.
-Know your limitations and set realistic expectations for the sale. Let potential customers know that you can't promise them what they want, but you'll be able to show them a good "next step" in their buying process, with clear next steps all along the way.
-Build trust by being honest and supportive of your customer. When customers think they're going to be taken advantage of, they become more cautious and defensive in their thinking.
-Be prepared and be professional. Know your products or services inside and out. Take the time to dress professionally, learn the ins and outs of your product or service, and know all the benefits and drawbacks of what you are selling. Show up early both to appointments with customers and meetings with prospects as well.
-Follow up. Closely follow up with customers after a sale, either in person or via email or phone call, to make sure they're happy with their purchase and their experience working with you. If there's an issue, fix it quickly; if there are any questions about how something works, get on the phone or get on social media to communicate with them in a timely way.
-Be patient. It takes time to build a customer base, but if you keep your focus on the long-term and the big picture, it will pay off in the end.
And one of our favorite quotes: "Nothing happens until someone sells something." -Peter Drucker.
With that said, here are some ways to sell more effectively in business:
Sell Benefits, Not Features
People don't buy products because of what they do; they buy products because of what those products can do for them. When selling online, be sure you're focusing on benefits instead of features because most buyers make decisions based on what's in it for them. If a customer is mostly interested in what a product will do for them and not how it works, they're much more likely to make a purchase.
Create Urgency
People want what they can't have, so get them to commit before the deal expires by setting a deadline on your product or offer. For example, set a deadline in which the product will go out of stock if you don't sell enough units, or promise an extra bonus if customers order before Thursday. You can also create urgency by promising to stop offering the product after that time period expires. The key is providing an incentive for customers who act quickly so you can reach sales goals or even just make some quick cash.
Create Value
A customer doesn't need to know as much as you do about a product's quality or performance before they're willing to make a purchase. They just need to understand what they stand to gain if they buy your product. A good way to think of this is by creating value before you sell: ask questions like: "If you buy this, what are you going to get out of it?" "What's one thing that would really help make life easier for you?" or "What would happen if this didn't work out for you?" By addressing these questions and presenting clear benefits of the product, customers will be more likely to make purchases.
Get People On Board
In addition to being a leader, you can also coach customers throughout the sales process by asking questions that get them on board with your product or service. Instead of asking, "Do you want to buy this product?" try asking something like, "What's one thing you're most concerned about buying this product?" Then address their concerns while explaining how they can be overcome with the help of your product.
Make It Easy To Understand
Whether it's an online shop or an in-person consultation, make sure your presentation is clear and easy for people to follow along with. Use visuals to help get people's attention, like pictures on a slide show, or blurs over images to catch their eye. Brevity is key- make sure everything you say is clear and concise so everyone can easily understand what you're saying. And if someone has any questions after the presentation, make sure you answer them in detail.
Give Your Product Away
Giving away a product or service without requiring any money in return is another great way to sell more products or services over time. For example, if you're getting good results from your product or service but it's not making enough money for you at this point, consider offering it for free as a way to generate some marketing buzz. You can also offer a free trial to test the waters before selling it.
As you can see, there are different ways to sell more effectively in business. It's important that you find what works best for your business and do it as frequently as possible. By implementing these tips, you can add new customers to your sales process while increasing your profits at the same time!
