I’ve built six businesses from zero to $100 million in revenue, and I can tell you that creating a brand is the single most important thing you can do. Here are my five steps for how to build a brand.
Step 1: Build the right products.
Starting with a great product is the easiest way to create a brand. I’m not talking about just being innovative or different — I’m talking about building something people really want and can’t wait to buy. Many companies get this wrong, and when they do, they struggle with branding because their products aren’t very good.
I’ll give you an example: My company, Crazy Egg, is an analytics tool that helps businesses figure out which parts of their websites are working best. Our core product is something web professionals love and appreciate — they use our product to make money, and we get paid when they succeed. But I quickly found that even though people loved our product, they didn’t want to pay for it. We tried advertising, but the clicks were a fraction of a penny and we had no customers. Over time, I realized that people loved our free trial but would not pay for the service.
I knew we had to change direction. We didn’t have a brand yet, but I knew we needed to build one. Why? Because you need a brand if you want people to trust and rely on you, and you only gain trust when they pay for your product.
A year later — after we made a major pivot that changed our product dramatically — our business started working. Even though it was still in beta, even though our analytics weren’t nearly as good as the free tools out there, customers were willing to pay for Crazy Egg because they saw how powerful the tool was and how much money it would make them. That’s the brand — a promise of what your customers will gain by using your product.
Step 2: Be someone people want to work with (and hire.)
This is where I see many companies stumble. They build an amazing product that everyone loves, but they don’t realize they have to make it easier for people to work with them, too. It’s the people who can turn a business from just something you use into a part of your life. For example, I live in San Francisco and have built my business primarily around engineers. So I know how to help engineers, but I also understand that my customers are managers, owners and marketers — people who might not be engineers themselves.
Step 3: Be more than a logo (and design your identity.)
That’s why we launched the crazy egg logo. It came after years of our company having no identity at all — no symbols or colors that stood out. The logomark of a chicken is simple, yet professional and cool-looking. You can see it on every piece of collateral and marketing material I deliver.

Conclusion
Have a great product, be someone people want to work with, and be more than a logo. That’s my advice for how to build a brand.
