How to Hold a Successful Garage Sale
A lot of people find it perplexing to decide what they should sell on a garage sale. Should they be selling an old tool that they no longer use? A broken TV or computer? The problem with the old is that it’s out of date. This doesn’t apply to second-hand or gently used items but generally speaking, if you have a dirt bike used for quads and someone else is trying to sell their two-stroke, then you probably shouldn’t expect to get much money. The used bike for sale should be something that is still in good condition and that you can resell for a reasonable price.
Just like anything else, there's some planning to get a profitable garage sale. The first concern is if you have to have a garage sale at all. The reason is that garage sales are not a big money maker. It will put sweat on your brow and everybody knows the effort required to prepare one, but generally, they don’t make much cash. If you are thinking of having one as an investment strategy, you might be making a mistake.
However, garage sales are not simply for using up old stuff and expecting to sell it for the price you bought it. The best thing about a garage sale is that it’s a way for people to meet and get one another’s goods at bargain prices. In other words, you sell them something and they give you cash in return. It’s a simple transaction but they make great memories to talk about when meeting people at a garage sale.
Being organized is the key to success as having an unorganized garage sale can hurt your average selling price. Make sure that all your items are on display and free from dust, grime or dirt. This brings up the second point, how you should advertise for your garage sale.
There are a few things that you need to think about when advertising your garage sale, such as location and contact information. The location is an important thing because people will not come if they have to travel a lot and will come only if they know where you’re going to be and that they may be able to get there quickly.
Also, be sure to check out all your items beforehand so that they are in good condition, cleaned up and ready to go out on display. The third point is taking some kind of payment in advance before the actual event, but this should not be too much because it might discourage some people from buying these items. An excellent idea would be to have a small donation box so that people may donate money to a good cause.
Lastly, there is the question of pricing. A common price strategy is the homemade price tag, which can be made out of cardboard and written with marker. The homemade tag will give you an impression of being cheap, but this is not really true as they can have a professional look after they are printed out at Office Depot or Kinkos.
It has also been noted that these types of tags tend to attract more people because of its unusual appearance, but you should use it in moderation since too many may draw even more attention to your garage sale. The other strategy is to set the price according to the demand or the market value of an item. The purpose is to set a realistic price for your items and not one that you would find in a book or magazine.
Basically, to sell at your garage sale, you should have some items that have high demand such as those used quads, guitars and cameras. To make this happen, you should prepare your items well before when you open your garage sale by booking parking spaces and arranging transportation from other vehicles so that you may avoid losing time and money if someone has to return home. Lastly, it is better to have a small profit than a huge loss.
Also, you should know that garage sales are more like flea markets which means that people are not looking for a bargain. They are actually looking for something unique and special that they cannot find elsewhere. This goes to show why you should make your own tags since the homemade ones will always attract the most attention and help you get by with prices that may be lower than what others are selling their items at.
Garage sale is one of the best ways to have fun with friends and relatives. It may be hard at times but you both can enjoy it if you're organized. Take note of the above tips so that you can have a successful garage sale.
