Don't Shoot the Sales Team

 Don't Shoot the Sales Team

Everyone knows the phrase, "Don't shoot the messenger," right? But when you're in a business where making sales is critical to your success, it can be tempting to take out your frustration on the proverbial salesman. Business owners and managers bear the responsibility of keeping their employees productive and happy. That's why it's essential that they know how to manage frustration effectively when faced with closing a sale.

Salespeople struggle too; after all, they're very easy targets for abuse as well as potential victims of things like negative feedback. As Sigurd Fardal writes, "The key is not to turn people into zombies. Given that we live in a time-based culture, where success is equated with results and sales is a metric of performance, it's easy to lose sight that people are human beings. And being human means having good days and bad days."

So how can you protect your sales team from the negative effects of their jobs? Make time for them. Take the time to listen to them. Over the course of our careers, we each have the potential to sell hundreds upon hundreds of products. And while those sales can be legitimate and honest, some may not be so on-the-level . . . which means there are even more opportunities for salespeople to feel resentful or used as a result of their efforts.

Offer support by way of social media support groups, like this one. Make sure your team is getting out of the office to exercise and enjoy time with friends on the weekends.

Further, even if you're not in a position to share information about sales figures in general, give information about individual employees' performance. This can be just as effective as sharing sales figures from week to week or month to month, since it shows that you care about every member of your team.

And lastly, don't forget to respond (quickly) when people do go above and beyond for your company. Simply saying, "thank you" and letting that person know that you appreciate their efforts can make a world of difference.
