Business fight for teeth whitening customers

Here's a true story.
A man starts getting his teeth whitened at a discount. He buys three sessions and pays $600 total, which is $300 less than going to the dentist normally charges for a single bleaching appointment.
He has his first session, the dentist goes over what he will do during the procedure: in just one hour, he and his assistant will be able to lighten up to eight shades of yellowish-brown teeth on average.
The next day, he gets his second session done and learns that this procedure does not last more than six weeks, meaning that after only 60 days of treatment he'll need another visit.
The customer decides to take all three sessions at the same time, so he buys the third one and pays $1,200 for three quite expensive appointments. Because this is his first experience with teeth whitening and it's a discount, he decides to simply trust the dentist and his staff.
The dentist says that because the treatment will be done over three days instead of one day like usually happens, they'll need to charge him $650 per visit instead of $492 (if paid separately). No big deal.
This man, who is a business owner himself, asks many questions but can't find any evidence that what he's being told is true. The dentist says that the process has to be done in three sessions and although the teeth will not become eight shades whiter, this way they'll stay whiter for a longer time.
The man asks about the price and is told that he will be charged $650 per session because he's buying three sessions at once. Furthermore, because there are no refunds or exchanges, if he wants to cancel or postpone the appointment there will be a charge of $100 per session. The dentist also tells him that if he goes to another discount place that offers one-hour whitening sessions they'll charge him $300 per visit instead of $492.
He gets out of there with his head spinning and completely lost in regard to what really happened.
He sees the next ad in the paper and goes for another two sessions.
He finally gets what to do with his mouth and tells everyone he knows about this unbelievable deal. He posts a number of articles that are written on top of the facts, which prove that what he's been told doesn't match up with the reality.
How can they offer him this discount? The dentist is clearly not a big player in the market. How can he afford to do it? What's the catch?
The man tells everyone that his dentist is a small company and he offers them this discount because he has to compete with the big chains. He also says that for big companies, whitening teeth in three sessions instead of one is not something they're interested in. The dentists who work at the chain offices don't have any idea how to whiten teeth in less than an hour and they're afraid that if they try it on the customers, they'll lose business.
Although this might seem strange, it is truly happening every day throughout America and other countries as well.
What's the reason behind it?
Dentists don't want to break their teeth whitening chains to be able to offer cheaper prices! The ones that work in the chains use only one hour and a half of the time of each customer. This way they can charge less, not lie to their clients and still get more than enough money to be happy. More business owners are threatened by this idea than you might think.
The problem is that big companies usually have a huge selection of products and services which they sell at any time and in any place without worrying about any competition at all. This is what leads them to decrease the price and do anything possible so their customers won't go somewhere else for cheaper service.
People, who are used to going to the dentist every six months and ordering expensive whitening treatments, are not interested in this kind of thing. The reason is that they've never come across a service that actually is cheaper than the normal ones. They don't know what else they can do besides paying more each time they go to the dentists.
Dentists also have a huge selection of products and services that they have to sell in order for their clients not to make any other arrangements. This is what keeps them from working and using the time they have in the dental office as efficiently as possible. They want to sell this selection even if they're not going to use it themselves.
The dentists who work in these chains want to make more money, but they don't want this to affect the quality of their work. There are many reasons for that, but the main one is that customers are more willing to pay more money when they know it will guarantee a professional and painless treatment.
Small chain-less dentists can't afford to do it, because a large percentage of their patients don't think about whitening their teeth. They're just trying to make the best of their money and go shopping in the supermarket.
People who go to these dentists realize that they're going with a cheap service that they can't afford, and they don't like it. They also don't feel comfortable, since they have no idea what to do with their mouths. That's why many patients find other ways to save money on this treatment – either through discount places or through other types of dental services.
Many people think that all dentists are in big chains and offer the same old discounts all of the time, but this is not true at all. There are many small chain-less dentists who offer the same treatment for less money.
When you do research about these cheap places and services, you will find that most of them work in the same way – they only give discounts when you buy a certain number of procedures or services at a time.
They don't want to tempt people to become regular customers and make their offers more attractive every time they're offered, so they wait until you've already tried their service before offering them the discount.
