 Building Great Business Relationships

In order to create great business relationships, you must know how to create a good first impression. Don't forget these things...

- Be punctual. As soon as you agree on meeting time, be sure to show up right on time, or even a few minutes early so that you don't keep the other person waiting.
- Treat them like someone who matters in your life. It's not about being fake and syrupy sweet; it's about giving them the respect they deserve as someone who has been important in your life up until this point and will continue to be so going forward.
- Apologize for any mistakes. This is one of the quickest ways to get your credibility shot when you're trying to build a great business relationship. Why? Because it shows that you know the difference between a mistake and something that is intentional or malicious.
- Always follow up on what you say and do, including asking questions. You want to show that you're interested in their communications with them and not just what they throw out on social media channels.
- Be straightforward with how you communicate intent, plans, and expectations with them at all times.
- You're allowed to be relaxed. It's fine to let loose and be yourself around them because after all, you're on a personal level with them.
- Ask them questions that show that you're sincerely interested in what they have to say.
- Always give them a call or text at the time that you set up the meeting. That way, even if it was late when they called or texted you, they can tell you the time of their arrival and if they got lost along the way.
- Be sure not to hold back when talking with them. Just because you're playing it cool doesn't mean that they need to take this very seriously as well. Be as relaxed as you would be in your own home.
- Be sure not to let them take your sense of humor personally. While they may find something you said offensive, that's not what you're looking for. You just want to give them a different point of view; one that they may have never seen before and it may not always reflect well on you.
- Make sure that they spend time with their family and enjoy the things that they love doing when they're away from work.
- Be certain to listen more than you speak during conversations with them. It shouldn't be about how much information you're getting out of them; it should be about how much information is being exchanged between the two of you.
- Always have an open relationship with them so that they understand that you're free to hang out with other people and do other things when you're not in the office.
- Be respectful to their opinions and ask for their advice on how to make decisions.
- Have your boss introduce you, if one is necessary, during a first meeting so that they understand who you are and what you offer to their team. This helps them gain insight into how serious a person they're working with is.

- How they can add value to your business, and
- What they think or have in mind when it comes to their business relationship with you.

"Building Great Business Relationships" is a great article to help you build lasting relationships within your business network. The article lists many tips. I have listed a few here.
1) Be punctual. This means showing up on time and being there as agreed upon. When you show up late, or you miss the appointment, people will think that you don't care and they will be less motivated to work with you. If someone is late for an appointment, be sure to let them know that you are waiting for them and when it will be okay for them to arrive (15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour).
2) Treat people with respect even if they don't like what you do or how you do it (even if it's good). You wouldn't want to be treated with disrespect.
3) Apologize when you make a mistake. People will appreciate that you are human and willing to admit that you are wrong or made a mistake. They will respect you more because of this.
4) Follow up with people in your business network before and after an event, meeting, etc...
