Buying a home in Costa Rica is definitely an enriching experience; however, it should not be taken lightly. One should consider all that is required to purchase a home in Costa Rica, including the laws, financing options and other factors. Financing can be done in Costa Rica, but obtaining a mortgage for a property in the Central Valley of Costa Rica is more difficult than taking out the same loan for property located on the Pacific Coast.

If you are interested in buying property in or around SJO airport, you need to know that there are no mortgages available for purchasing land across from Juan Santamaria Airport. It is possible to obtain a mortgage for homes built on land across from the airport; however, some banks may not approve mortgages if they feel that property values will not increase significantly over time due to its proximity to an international airport.

Reforma LNG terminal receives first shipment of U.S.-bound LNG by Ramón Navarro

August 7, 2014

*First shipment of U.S.-bound LNG from the Incepalpa I liquefaction project by Panama-Pacifico Energy Inc. arrives at the Reforma LNG terminal in western Costa Rica, marking a milestone for the country’s gas industry and for this Central American country that is eager to attract foreign investment.

The first shipment is expected to arrive at Reforma in six to nine days, said Franklin Torres, president of Panama-Pacifico Energy. The natural gas will be shipped from Incepalpa I’s 219-kilometer trunk line to the terminal built by Spanish energy conglomerate Acciona's Acciona Energía S.A.

“This is a really big milestone for Panama-Pacifico Energy, and for Costa Rica,” leading LNG analyst Selwyn Jones of the Wood Mackenzie consultancy said in Spanish. “It indicates that the country is heading towards its goal of being an important gas producer.”

The Reforma terminal was already the destination of two shipments: one from Argentina and another from Chile, which are both LNG supply markets. Both of those shipments were approved by the FTPA, the Costa Rican Energy Ministry said.

The shipment of natural gas is part of the first full-scale LNG project in Latin America, which has been under construction since 2009 and is expected to start commercial production by 2017. To date, the project has received a total investment of $US5 billion.

Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast between Panama and Nicaragua, Incepalpa I will produce 648mt per day (972 bar) LNG in an open-air liquefaction platform on 4,500 hectares (11,000 acres) of land with an investment capitalization of $US4.7 billion ($A4.8 billion).

Conclusion:

Incepalpa I is a joint venture between Spanish energy conglomerate Acciona and Panamanian firm Panamanian Pacifico Energy, with Incepalpa I’s shareholders holding 60 percent of the shares. From the start, the project attracted international interest, including the interest of Royal Dutch Shell Plc and French energy group EDF, which abandoned its bid for rights to invest in Costa Rica after both countries failed to overcome some legal obstacles.

Shell had planned to invest around $US4 billion ($A4.
