American Success Story: Office Max

 American Success Story:  Office Max

Do you have your dream office in mind? Whether you're a current small business owner or just wish to work for yourself some day, chances are that there's an office supply store ready to make all of your dreams come true. Office Max has been around since 1985 and they've got the tools (and prices) needed to bring any organization from paper piles to filing cabinets. The best part is that their cheap prices come with the guarantee of excellent customer service and hassle-free returns, which sounds like the perfect deal for new business owners who are trying to save money.

OfficeMax is a discount retail chain in the United States. It is owned by Office Depot and based in East Hanover, New Jersey. The chain's products include office stationery, computer supplies, and printer supplies.

OfficeMax began as a small office supply store that was founded in 1985 by a group of investors led by Janet Blasberg and her husband, Joe. The store eventually grew to have 5 locations. In 1993, the chain began to expand outside of the New York metro area through acquisitions and leases, which led the start of an aggressive expansion into other markets. An acquisition was made in March 1996 by Office Depot, which added almost 400 stores in areas where there were very few OfficeMax stores at that time. The chain soon went public and began trading on NASDAQ in 1997.

In August 1999, Office Depot announced that they had completed their acquisition of Keepsake & Things Inc., whose office supply business was recently acquired from CIBC World Markets Inc.. The acquisition raised Office Depot's number of store locations to 1,000, and the chain began to look towards international expansion.

In February 2004, Office Depot bought Staples for $8.6 billion. The deal meant that about 1,800 of Office Depot's stores were now under the same corporate banner as Staples' 5,800 stores. As part of the deal with Staples, Office Depot changed its name from OfficeMax to simply "Office Depot" in April 2004. Shortly after the acquisition, however, there was a dispute between Office Depot and Staples over which chain would own the rights to use the word "Staples", and in December 2006 it was announced that Staples would be spun off into a separate company within itself by 2008.

In March 2008, Office Depot was acquired by three other office supply retailers in a deal for $3.9 billion. The three companies involved in the deal were Staples, Aurigen and Pergament Capital Partners. Since the merger, Office Depot has continued to expand internationally, with its first branch outside of North America opening in Australia at Parramatta Westfield Shopping Centre in 2011.

This is a list of notable locations of OfficeMax stores. Locations are sorted by metropolitan area first and then alphabetically within the metropolitan area; each state is listed separately for sites that are located within multiple states (e.g., Florida or California-multiple locations in both Florida and California). "inc. " is used to refer to inactive, defunct and/or reorganized locations. This list does not include OfficeMax stores in retail complexes within shopping malls or "big box" stores, or those under a co-branded business such as Office Depot-Pentagon or OfficeMax-Circuit City. Many of these locations are recognizable by the dark blue glass cubes outside the building.

Office Depot also operated international branches in several countries, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium (inc. Luxembourg), Chile, Dominican Republic (7 stores), El Salvador (2 stores), Germany, Guatemala (2 stores), Honduras(3)and Mexico (3). All of these branches have since been closed down.

OfficeMax was featured in the Season 3 episode of The Office entitled "The Coup".
