To do or not to do ... That is the question!

Have you ever asked yourself if it is better to do or not to do something? In this blog post, I will help you answer your question. Let's start with some examples:

- Should I eat the sandwich now or not? (do)
- Should I ask for feedback on my essay now or not? (not)
- Should I go to class out of nostalgia or not? (not)
But wait, there's more! Every time we say "should" in English, it has an implication. And that implication can be "a real possibility" and/or "an obligation.

- I should study for the test. (obligation)
- I should send an email to my friend. (real possibility)
- I should say hello to Amanda. (real possibility)
- I should give my daughter a kiss. (a real impossibility!)
Let's now look at some situations that you could use this grammar point in:
1) You see your annoying colleague eating potato chips at his desk and you want to tell him something: "Aren't you going to eat a sandwich?", "Don't you think you'll be very hungry if you only eat potato chips?"
2) Your favorite TV show is on, but it is also time for dinner. Should you eat now or wait till the evening?
3) You have a girlfriend that loves to go shopping. Should you go shopping with her or not?
4) Your best friend wants to go on a date. Should you go with your friend, or not?
5) Your country is having a lot of refugees right now. Should we accept them or not?
Why am I writing this blog post though? I'm just a human being talking to another human being: YOU! So, I want you to get the question in mind first so that you can answer it on the spot! Anyway... let's see how could we ask and answer that question if we would use it correctly.
- Do you want to go out  with us? (to be done)
- Would you like to go out with us? (not to do)
- Are you going out with us? (doing)

Before I show you how to use this form, let me give you some background.
- If a verb is used in the infinitive form, it expresses an action that is not connected to anything. It could be connected to something in the future or past tense.
- To use this form, all you have to do is take the Infinitive and add "to" before it:  To eat  => Eat it!
You can think of this form as a function word (which means that it fills a certain spot instead of a real word). For example:
- If it is an infinitive and you want to use it as a noun, you have to add "to" after it. For example:  She wanted to go out with her friends, but she forgot. This means that her friends were the reason why she wanted to go out.
- If the infinitives are plural, you don't have to change anything and can use them normally in a sentence. For example:  They asked him several questions on different topics . He answered all of them .
- The other option is if the infinitives are singular and you want them as a verb (as in the examples above). In this case, you have to change the ending. For singular nouns, the ending is "- (e)s", and for plural nouns the ending is "-ing".
Now, let's see some examples:
- To finish first :  He wanted to finish first because then he would get a reward from his teacher. He was also competing with his sister. - Hey! What are you doing?! You see that I'm studying for this test ! Please stop interrupting my study time! - Tell me what picture you want to draw , and I'll give it to you. - Please make me a sandwich. - Stop texting me, you're interrupting my study time! - Are you going to go out with them?
- Did you finish your homework ? - Yes, I finished it. - Did you finish lunch?
I hope you enjoyed this blog post on "Should-do". See you in the next one!

Conclusion: Now that you know this, you can ask yourself this question if someone asks you what is the best thing to do in your country.
- Are there famous people in your country?  => Do they!
- Do they want to go out with us?  => Let's do it!
- Should we go out with them?  => Let's do it!
