The Power Of Belief Broken Down
In this blog post, I will attempt to break down the power of belief and finally put to bed the question of whether or not it is a universally accepted truth that believes can change your life.
Believe it or not, we are all born with minds that are pre-programmed for success. From birth our brains are primed to survive and thrive in this world. The pre-programming process goes something like this: You experience a situation and you learn from it (either through trial pers error, by imitating someone else’s behavior, or through an intense emotional response). That response then becomes a trigger for future situations - when you see those same things in the future they cause that same learned reaction.
In other words, you have a particular thought, feeling or reaction to situations that cause you to take action and move in a certain direction. In some cases this is good and in others it can be limiting or even self-defeating.
I’m a big believer that our thoughts are the single biggest deciding factor for our success or failure. My personal belief is that we come into this world with unlimited potential but the problem is most people never tap into those resources because their subconscious mind has them locked onto ideas of what they’re capable of and what their life holds for them.
The subconscious mind is a place where we hold all the programming from our past experiences and filter them through the filter of our emotions. The more intense and powerful the emotion, the more power it holds. For example, anger can have a greater impact than happiness. Believe me, I’ve experienced anger on a daily basis (not just when I was younger) - it’s an intense emotion that holds tremendous power over my life.
The result is that most people believe they are limited in what they can achieve in life or what kind of future they can create for themselves because they have placed their thinking limitations outside themselves instead of within themselves.
For example let’s say you were born into a lower economic neighborhood and your family was struggling. It’s almost common knowledge that such situations will oftentimes shape someone’s future for the worse. However, I don't personally believe that's true. My belief is that it doesn't shape someone's future for the worse; it merely shapes their perception of their future.
I believe that you can come from any background, learn any amount of information or intelligence at any point in life and still succeed in your career and life if you are willing to take action on what you've learned.
It's common knowledge that most people who come from a difficult background, don’t have much in the way of formal education and are driven to succeed by pure ambition and the desire to better their situation. Yet there are still those who have failed miserably despite having every opportunity to succeed.
I believe that it is not the lack of resources or opportunities that determines someone’s future for them; it is the belief that they are limited by their past. It is a matter of perspective more than anything else. You can literally see life as an obstacle or you can see it as an opportunity to grow and mature if you learn how to develop your identity, meaning... who you really are.
The power of belief is what ultimately separates people who succeed from those who fail. The power of belief is what causes some people to be motivated, work hard and ultimately change the course of their life. My father was born in Jamaica (a country celebrated for its sprinters) but he still believed that he would have a more comfortable life as a result of his hard work. He immigrated to the United States where he worked as a laborer and was able to build a better life for himself and his family despite his circumstances. My mother came from a well off family but believed that she would live a simpler, happier life by working hard and not taking on the stressful burden of over-indulgence.
I believe they are both examples of people who believed they could overcome their all obstacles - and they did. It wasn't by luck or coincidence. It was because they would never give up on what was possible for them and refused to accept the limits that were placed upon themselves by their past experiences.
Belief is the key to a successful and fulfilling life. And one of the main things that separates people from those who achieve success is belief in themselves - in their ability to overcome whatever lies in front of them. And this belief is created from learning, from experience and from an emotional response that acts as a trigger for future situations.
The good news is that you can change your life, your future and your outcomes by changing the way you think and feel about a situation. If you want something different, then do something different. Change the way you think about things, act on what seems possible - even if it seems highly unlikely - and take action to improve your lot in life.
Here are the two key questions to ask yourself:
1. What do I believe to be true?
2. What will I do with what I've learned?

Conclusion
I know that it is possible to overcome obstacles during the most challenging times in your life and I want to share my experiences and lessons learned with you.
When I was an 11-year old kid struggling to understand who I was and where I fit in, I realized that there was no one out there for me who could relate and provide the answers that I needed. So, knowing that nobody would be able to understand what I felt inside, I began seeking answers from everyone around me... from all different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and philosophies.
