The Mystery Behind Enthusiasm

 The Mystery Behind Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm has always been one of the most important predictors of overall happiness that scientists have ever looked at. Enthusiastic people tend to be happier than calm, composed individuals. They also tend to be more productive employees and better students. It's no wonder, then, that trying to understand enthusiasm is a topic on many psychologists' minds!

This article explores the different ways experts try to define enthusiasm, as well as how th

Blogger: PostsLoaded more posts.ey believe it can help people in a profound way. It also delves into some of the most prominent theories that have been formed to account for this peculiar and alluring emotion.

First of all, it's important to note that scientists are not sure what "enthusiasm" really is. A lot of them see this as a mixture of high levels of energy, excitement, and passion—phenomena that are closely linked to the activation of the brain's reward system. Others see enthusiasm as being more closely related to feelings of eagerness and drive.

Regardless, there is no doubt that enthusiasm is an extremely powerful factor in our lives. Some people just naturally have it, while other people might need to try harder in order to reach the same level of enthusiasm as their peers. Unfortunately, scientists are still not sure how this works.

That said, some of them have at least been able to figure out what a lack of enthusiasm looks like. Research has shown that people who suffer from depression, for example, tend to show less enthusiasm than the average person—especially when they are performing tasks that are challenging or tasking. And when faced with something that involves a lot of risk, it seems by nature that most people will be less enthusiastic about it— especially once they understand what the risks entail.

So when it comes to optimism and pessimism, are these two emotions opposites? While the term "pessimism" is typically used to describe negative feelings, some scientists believe that it goes a lot deeper than that. It's not often that you can find a true "opposite" of something, but pessimists are thought to be more optimistic than the average person—at least for the first few minutes after they see something or try out a new product.

This is because pessimists tend to be aware of their personal shortcomings and failures, while optimists tend to let these failures pass without making an effort to fix them. And while pessimism can sometimes sap a person's enthusiasm, optimists are often able to pick it back up again by working on their flaws.

The term "optimism" is often used interchangeably with "hope," which is the belief that things will get better in the future. It's not just a vague feeling, though: there are many different factors that help to determine whether or not someone has hope for their future. A lot of psychologists believe that we have different kinds of hopes—some of them being more general than others.

For example, some people might have "global" hopes—which means they're hoping for something global, such as world peace or an end to world hunger.

Others might have "personal" hopes—hopes that involve having better relationships with family and friends. And still others might have "interpersonal" hopes—hopes that involve being able to get along better with the people around them.

Finally, some psychologists believe that there are "existential" hopes—hopes for a greater meaning in life or for a higher power to help us change our perspective on things.

Most of these aren't mutually exclusive, though. It's possible to hold several personal and interpersonal hopes at once, while aspiring to a better world at large. And you can have existential hopes, as well as hope for a better future, without also having any corresponding religious beliefs.

One of the most famous psychologists who has studied these hopes is Albert Ellis. Ellis argued that many people are not aware of their own hopes because they have not learned to use their rational thought processes to make sense of them. This made him a huge proponent of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), which he developed in the 1950s. Ellis believed that all emotions—including fear, anger, sadness and surprise—can be linked back to irrational thinking patterns in our brains.

So why exactly are we so emotional when it comes to our hopes? In 1974, psychologist James C. Coyne figured out that "hope" was just a codeword for the prefrontal cortex. As it turns out, this region of the brain is responsible for regulating our emotions, as well as some of the more complex cognitive activities we perform on a daily basis.

The prefrontal cortex gets its name because it's located right in front of our other brain structures. It's responsible for coordinating these structures and keeping them in line with one another.

Since the prefrontal cortex is so closely connected to our emotional and cognitive systems, it's pretty easy to see why it manages to keep these systems in alignment. It serves as a sort of "moral compass" that helps us figure out what we want and how we want to get it. It also keeps our body under control by regulating the autonomic nervous system. This way, the prefrontal cortex helps us stay focused on meaningful things, instead of being consumed with unimportant concerns.

So what is a meaningful thing? That's the tricky part. It's easy to say that we need to "be happy," but it's not possible to be happy all the time. And even when we are happy, it's sometimes possible for us to think about other things that can make us unhappy or upset. In fact, many psychologists believe that there is no such thing as happiness, only fleeting moments of pleasure reaching a certain threshold of intensity and satisfaction before they are over—as well as sustained periods of contentment that don't last very long unless we do something about it.

So how do we keep hope in our lives? Ellis argued that we should live according to these principles:

We need to work on ourselves and repair our flaws so that the prefrontal cortex can better manage our emotions. We need to reason with the prefrontal cortex when it's irrational and make it realize that things like death or failure are not as bad as it thinks. We need to learn to take advantage of the brain's ability to regulate our emotions. For example, we may have a brain injury and need surgery. If we can't learn how to take control of ourselves when we go under anesthesia, then the procedure will be more painful than necessary—especially if a healthy dose of painkillers wasn't enough.

Conclusion

Hope is an essential part of our everyday lives. Without it, we might as well be dead. It's the thing that keeps us going in the face of adversity and suffering. But at the same time, hope can be dangerous when we're not careful with it.

Sometimes, hope can cause us to set unrealistic expectations on our goals and dreams. Other times, we might let hope cloud our judgement and make us behave irrationally despite all of the facts—on both sides—of a situation.

In other words, there are many situations in which people have a lot to gain from being realistic about their hopes.
