The Mental Game And Your Burning Desire
If you've ever felt your burning desire to achieve success dwindle, or not existed in the first place, it's likely that you're struggling with an issue within your mental game.
The mental game is an often overlooked aspect of our lives which has a big impact on how we feel about our ability to be successful. This article aims to explore the importance of this, and teach some steps that you can take to improve it and allow your desire for success to re-emerge.
Generally, when you're feeling discouraged, uninspired or unmotivated it's because you're lacking in one or more of the areas of your mental game. The mental game encompasses skills such as self-discipline, confidence and self-belief.
What is the importance of having a strong mental game?
For starters, if you feel unmotivated and lack confidence in your ability to achieve success it will be pretty difficult to feel like you have a burning desire to achieve success.
It's likely that if this has happened to you in the past, or is happening to you now, that your burning desire for success has been extinguished.
If you're lacking in self-discipline you'll find it hard to remain consistent in your efforts until your goals are achieved.
If you lack self-belief you'll feel like anything is possible, but not for you.
The mental game is the most important aspect of success. If the mental game isn't strong, the rest doesn't matter. You can get anything you want, in life, and in business, but if you don't have the strong mental game to go with it then you're going to have a hard time achieving success.
What can you do to improve your mental game?
First of all, I'd like for us to take a look at this famous quote from Jack Nicholson's character in the film "As Good As It Gets".
"Forget about the past. It's over. So let it go!"
It's true. It's rarely productive that we dwell on our failures or old mistakes from our past.
You can't gain anything from it and you're likely to continue to struggle with the same issues in the future if you do.
We often tend to want to beat ourselves up about our past mistakes, which does little more than create a negative view of ourselves.
We need to begin changing how we feel about things by not wasting time on thoughts that are of no value. We're able to learn from our experiences, but if we spend too much time on it then we'll lose the positive aspects as well as the negatives.
For example, instead of dwelling on the past we should focus on the future.
Instead of thinking what you did was wrong, why not think about how you can improve?
How to work on your mental game:
1) Re-establish the mind-body connection. The mental game relies heavily on the body. We need to help our bodies recover from fatigue, get a good night's rest, eat properly, and then exercise regularly; in order for us to feel healthy and energetic. This can help us perform at a higher level in all aspects of our lives (not just work). 2) Get inspired. Inspirational speakers and great books can get you re-inspired and energised. Plus, they can help you to learn new things that'll inspire you to take action. 3) Get online. Most of us are online at least a few hours every day; why not do some research or read up on something? This can give us new things to think about that might help us take action, or change something we're doing in our lives. 4) Get active. Start taking part in activities that'll help your mind-body connection and socialise with people that can help you progress further than you could on your own. 5) Uncover your inner-genius. When you start thinking more about yourself and the things you can achieve, it'll be easier to feel good about yourself, but it's also important to realise just how amazing you really are. To do this, think of the things that people have achieved in the past, and how much time and energy they must have put into them (usually without a salary).
We're all capable of achieving anything we set out to do; we just need to decide that we really want to do it!
What can you achieve?
You're able to reach any goal that you set for yourself with a burning desire for success. Just think about all the great individuals that you know who have achieved (and are still achieving) such a wide range of goals, and it's these people that'll get you excited to achieve something.
It's very difficult to feel like you can do something if there's some form of doubt or fear in your mind. The very first step is for you to remove that fear because once you do then you'll be able to reach your goals and perform at a high level.
Common mental game issues:
1) Lack of self-discipline - Don't give up. The next time you feel like giving up, instead ask yourself why. Why not just push through to the end and see what happens?
2) Lack of self-belief - Don't rely on others. The next time you feel like someone is going to let you down, or have doubts in them, ask yourself why didn't you go with your gut feeling and not question them.
3) Lack of confidence - Don't be afraid to fail. The next time that you feel scared about trying something new, or are struggling with the thought of failure, remind yourself that it's normal and that everyone has problems at some point in their lives.
The mental game is an important part of our lives and once it's strong then we'll be able to achieve many great things.
Get your mind in the right place by motivating yourself and pushing through your barriers. If you can do this, then you'll be able to reach any goal that you set for yourself and live life to the fullest.
