The Magic Of Getting Started

 The Magic Of Getting Started

Some of the most challenging obstacles to achieving your goals are actually self-set. These types of hurdles usually come in the form of doubt, fear, or feeling like you don’t know where to start. But just because we set them for ourselves doesn't mean they can be taken lightly.

But even if you are going up against some self-imposed challenges, it might not be as hard as you think to make your dreams a reality. These three steps below will provide a simple guide and motivation for those days when fear or doubt is creeping in and getting the best of you.

1) Find a realistic starting point.

Don’t focus on how big or small an accomplishment is. Rather, do your best to start right where you are and make that the “smallest” step towards your goal. You might want to think of this as a run up - a short but very challenging run up before you reach your actual goal.

2) Find a small but necessary amount of time.

It will really help if you can cut down on some of the time spent focusing on your work in order to get comfortable with it. For example, if you are getting out of a rut with your writing and want to get back on track and start writing again, you will probably want to dedicate around 20 minutes a day for two weeks.

3) Find a small but necessary amount of effort.

Don’t think about what “good enough” looks like. Instead of seeing how far away from perfection you sit as one step in your journey, try finding how close you are to the goal at your current point in time. Don’t focus on the “smallest requirement” or on how much work it will take for you to reach perfection; rather find something that is realistically within reach right now.

If you can follow these three steps and make this a part of your daily routine, it is easier to maintain motivation because you get the satisfaction of progress towards your goals. Rather than focusing on how much more work there is to be done, focus on what you have achieved so far (and even celebrate it if you want to!).

Chapter 1

The Money is in Your Mind

“I can't afford to go back to school.”

This was a thought I used to think, and believe, on a very regular basis. Although I never said it out loud, this was the type of belief that would cause me to accept my financial situation instead of doing what I really wanted or needed to do. It was an excuse that allowed me to stay in situations where I was unhappy and always left wondering why things weren't going my way financially. In this sense, "I can't afford it" became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

When I was younger, my dad would always say to me, "Go to school. You will always regret it if you don't learn something." Even though I didn't really understand it at the time, something in my subconscious was choosing the thoughts of "I can't afford to go back to school" over those of "I need help with school."

After an unexpected layoff when I was 19 years old, I found myself struggling to find a good full-time job in the field that I loved. As a writer, this was a difficult situation. Although my resume showed that I had previously worked as a freelance writer, writing had fallen off as far as career choices and opportunities were concerned.

Conclusion? I chose to do nothing, and with the economy being bad at the time, it wasn't as easy to get a job that paid enough for me to afford my rent. At the time, I felt that this was a self-imposed punishment because I had not been willing to work hard enough on getting what I wanted out of life.

A few weeks after making this realization, I got interested in an article written by a friend of mine. In the article, he shared his story about switching careers and how he made over $100,000 in his first year after graduating from college. He also talked about his current career choice and how he was able to switch careers as easily as unloading clothing in a closet.
