 7 Do’s And Don’ts Of Building Wealth

It’s only natural that the thought of accumulating a fortune can be overwhelming and intimidating. And somewhere along the way, it seems as though any sense of motivation has been lost and we are left with nothing but excuses.

This article breaks down some do's and don'ts for building wealth into a cut-and-dry list for you to reference in your day-to-day life. So if you're tired of being bogged down by the overwhelm, read on to learn what it takes to make yourself more successful!

#1: Do allow time for fun activities every day. The key word here is 'allow'.

A lot of people fall into the trap of working themselves to the bone, then completely sacrificing time for fun. While it might be easy to get caught up in career, children, and other responsibilities, this kind of attitude is exactly what keeps us from enjoying our lives. Each person needs time without the responsibilities in order to be happy.

It helps a lot if we are not too tired but rather tired enough to have fun with our friends and family. When we enjoy ourselves, we tend to accomplish a lot more work related goals.

#2: Do work hard every day with discipline and goal setting.

Work hard is a cliche that's thrown around in every part of our daily lives. Despite this, it is incredibly important because it shows commitment to victory and solidifies your position as a person who can achieve their goals.

If you don't work hard, then chances are you won't ever achieve anything. Just think back to the last time you put in extra effort. Was there anything on paper that states you accomplished this goal? While achieving goals is important, nothing beats the feeling of having accomplished something by yourself.

#3: Do keep your goals simple. As with anything, success comes from small steps.

It is important to have goals that are fully achievable, but it's okay to not be able to achieve them all at once if you are more concerned that you have done the best you can on any given day. The key is recognizing and rewarding yourself when you do make progress. This shows that other areas of your life will improve, allowing you to continue on your course towards success.

#4: Do follow a budget for all aspects of life. A budget is simply a plan for your money.

Of course, this means that you need to have a good idea of how much money you're bringing in and how much you will be spending. Once you have an accurate picture of this, make sure that there is money left over to save. If it doesn't work out the first time, keep adjusting until it does.

You can create a spreadsheet and manually enter all of your expenses or make use of the many budgeting apps available online.

#5: Do prioritize debt reduction if possible. Whether for a car loan, mortgage, or student loan debt, debt can really get out of control if not managed well.

While having debt is perfectly acceptable, it does not mean that you are successful. During the first year of my savings, I owed over $30,000 in student loan debt, which was $3000 more than I brought in each month.

This meant that all of my money went towards bills, and it really wasn't until January 2011 when I began paying attention to my finances that I realized how much money was going out and rather than saving, just spending. This was the direct reason why I was not able to save a large sum of money up until that point.

#6: Don't buy anything unless you have the cash in hand to pay for it. While there are a number of ways to get out of debt, if it is possible to delay purchasing something, then do so.

Once you have the money, then you can purchase the item you want but until that time, simply wait and save. If this means waiting months longer to buy your new car or TV, then so be it! It's better than spending money on interest or credit card payments. The choice is simple: spend less or earn more. The real tough choice comes in recognizing what must change in order for your goals to work out as planned.

#7: Do maximize your starting cash flow. The way you approach your financial goals is not as important as simply doing what it takes to achieve them.

This includes: creating a budget, paying off debt, and any other goal that seems worthwhile. It is important to consider what goals you can and cannot afford to pay for if they get in the way of your ultimate goal. A simple way of looking at this is that the net positives are worth more than the negatives by themselves.

#8: Do pay off your credit card balances each month and never carry a balance on a credit card. Credit cards are about putting money on us, but never about having money on us.

#9: Don't be afraid to move on to another company. If you aren't happy with a job, work situation or relationship, then get out and move on.

Many people will stay in the same job or relationship forever, simply because they hear that it's the only option available at that time. But truly successful people do not do this. It's okay to try out other opportunities even if you are sure it won't work out as well as the current one.

#10: Do invest in yourself. The most successful people invest in their own education so that they can have a competitive edge over the people around them.

Education is a must for anyone looking to better themselves and remain competitive in the workforce. There are so many ways to invest in yourself, but the best way is simply to buy books whenever you can afford it and learn something new that will be useful throughout your life.

#11: Don't be afraid of failure while pursuing your goals. Just because you try something doesn't mean that it's the right decision.

What is important is that you learn from your mistakes and move on. Most people get caught up in their own egos and think that they can't be beaten or can do everything perfectly. This is far from the truth. You should always try to improve while knowing that you're probably not doing everything right now as well as you can.

#12: Do have multiple goals going at once if possible. If you aren't working towards anything, then there are some things lacking in your life.

Successful people understand this fact and work hard to achieve all of their goals, whether related or not.

Conclusion

If you want to be successful, then you need to know what you're working towards. Life is not just about making money, but rather it's about doing the things that will make you happy and create memories that last a lifetime.

Do you want to save more money? Then add it to your goals list. Do you want to start a business? Then write down what your ultimate goal is with this company and take the steps necessary to get there. It truly is that simple.
