10 sure-fire measures to become the boss’s favorite

People get promoted in various ways, but often it’s because the boss has taken a liking to them. So what can you do to become his or her favorite?

1. Improve your work ethic: Show up early, stay late, and do more than is required of you. Nothing screams loyalty like someone who will work themselves half to death for the company (and it gets noticed).
2. Bring good ideas for improvement: Once you are there and have been seen as willing to go the extra mile, take advantage of that by suggesting new ideas for improving the company and its customers’ experience with it. A successful idea from a newcomer will always make one feel special.
3. Don’t be opinionated: If you have something good to say, say it and stifle your inner Miss Manners. Let the boss do the talking.
4. Help others who might also be promoted: Move people along in their careers, not just by getting them promoted, but by constantly mentoring those who are newbies or lower on the totem pole to make sure they know what they’re doing and can do it well.
5. Get along with co-workers: A good boss will be impressed by how well his or her employees get along. Even if they’re not friends, they must at least be cordial and give each other a chance to prove themselves.
6. Be honest: Don’t keep secrets that could harm the company, or even yourself in a promotion battle. If you have information on a competitor, for example, share it so the whole company can benefit from it; otherwise you’ll just look like you’re trying to have your cake and eat it too.
7. Keep your mouth shut: If you're asked to keep a secret, that’s what you do. You don’t talk about it with others, even if they are in management too. This just makes everyone uncomfortable and starts rumors that you can’t be trusted.
8. Know when to steer away from a boss conflict: If a boss is making your life miserable it’s OK to ask for advice on how to handle him or her, but keep the drama out of it and try to be objective about what is going on. Because let's face it, not being liked isn't the same as being treated unfairly.
9. Know when to back away from a boss: Like #8, you don’t want people to speculate about whether you’re having problems with your boss or not. Once you’re promoted no one is going to know what was happening, so keep it in the air just a little while longer and see how things are looking. If they still seem hopeless, then take the advice of an established employee and move on.
10. Be the person who doesn't make waves: The person who stays calm and lets others do their work will often be trusted and seen as a valuable asset by their boss. They will also be left alone and won't be forced to be the office police after making a mistake.

CHAPTER SUMMARY: Your ability to listen, keep your mouth shut, and get along with others can help you become the boss's favorite. This gives you an edge in getting promoted.
Let’s review ● The role of intuition ● Why intuition is more important than intelligence ● The difference between your conscious and unconscious mind ● How to develop your intuition using techniques from sport psychology
WHAT IS INTUITION?
Your mind is like a computer that processes information for you. It has two parts: a conscious, or analytical, and an unconscious part.
The conscious part of your mind is where you can control it using reason and logic. It monitors what's going on around you and makes decisions based on what you know.
To make good decisions in your life, you need to consider all the different facets of it: the unconscious part that acts much faster than the conscious mind; the intuitive part that monitors sensory perceptions; the emotional side which keeps our attention focused on what we care about; and the logical side that stores knowledge for use later.
You have to become familiar with each of these parts in yourself through meditation techniques to use them for optimal performance. For example, meditating on the awareness of your breath deepens your intuition, which can then help you make better decisions, by allowing you to notice things that the logical side misses.
HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR INTELLIGENCE
Research shows that intelligence is not what makes a person successful. Instead, it is having an idea and then knowing how to communicate it so others will want to follow you and buy from you.
Then there’s mediocrity and also a wide range of intelligent people who achieve great things but never reach the top because they don’t know how to communicate their ideas effectively. This essentially means that someone with a high IQ can't overcome this problem and get ahead in life.
I believe it’s because they miss the other part of intelligence: the ability to understand and apply emotional intelligence in their lives.
So what is emotional intelligence? It is the ability to monitor and respond to your own emotions, and also to have a positive effect on others. Again, this emotional part of you exists mostly in your unconscious mind, so you don’t need logic to make good decisions with it. Instead, you need intuition.
HOW TO GROW YOUR INTELLIGENCE ACCORDING TO LEARNERS
If you want to grow your intelligence and become more successful in life, here are the steps I suggest to use for effective growth:
1. Create a journal in which you write down all the things you notice intuitively about other people. These are patterns of behavior, emotions and reactions that define them as human beings or social beings.
2. Record some of those behaviors or reactions at first on paper; then commit them to your memory through meditation techniques.
3. Then, through dialogue exercises with yourself and others, let your intuition guide you to make decisions concerning the other person's motivation and interests, but only after considering logical thinking first.
4. Once you have done this with other people and are confident in your approach, it's time to do the same thing with yourself. Look within and find patterns in your own behavior that define you as a person, based on the information you recorded from others.
5. You can then use this knowledge to build your business and make a living for yourself and family.
It’s said that intuition is developed by practice, just like anything else. But it does take effort to learn how to open up to intuition at first. Remember these tips:
1) Meditate regularly for one hour each day, preferably after waking up; this exercises your subconscious mind so that it can open up more easily to intuitive feelings.
