7 Great Success Ideas!
This article is about success. Who doesn't want to be successful? It's a goal that many of us have been trying to achieve for decades, but with the glacial pace of change, it's no wonder why we're still circling our dreams on the sidewalk in front of our house.
The good news is that there has never been a better time than now to achieve your goals and actually get some action! These 7 great success ideas are just a few ways you can start breaking through your inhibitions and get yourself moving towards your dreams. Whether you want to become more confident or learn new skills, these steps will help guide you down the road towards personal transformation and lasting comfort in those shoes you've always wanted.
1. Start by defining success
This tip may sound like cheating, but it's actually not. In order to begin accomplishing something or achieving a goal, you need to first have some semblance in your mind of what that something is. If your aim is to learn French, for example, you must first define what it means to know French. For example, you could say that you want to be able to read French books, watch French movies, speak in French and even travel to France!
This may sound like a lofty goal (more on that later), but it's important so we can properly direct our efforts towards it. Once we have a clear vision of what success is and how we can achieve it, we are able to better hone in on the best possible path. Once you've defined your goals, take some time out of your schedule and give yourself some space. Allow these ideas to percolate and sleep on them for a day or two. Question everything and decide for yourself if these ideas are the way to go.
2. Read about successful people
Although we've all heard about a few people who were truly exceptional and achieved greatness, we often forget that many of the greats are still alive today and have been able to share their knowledge with us since they first achieved their success. There are countless books on success and personal development out there, but one of my personal favorites is "How to Win Friends & Influence People". It's a simple read but full of amazing quotes from the likes of great thinkers such as Aristotle and Confucius, as well as some modern day leaders such as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and even Ben Franklin. Read this book and you'll start to realize how the greats think and what their keys to success really are.
3. Watch a TED talk about success
There are some truly amazing talks available on YouTube that will teach you how to be more successful. Two of my personal favourites are Tim Ferriss's "Tales from the Crypt" series and Steve Pavlina's "Search Inside Yourself". Both give great insights into how certain people think about success and learn about ourselves as human beings at the same time. You can find these videos here: TED Talks.
4. Listen to music that inspires you
I find that music is a great inspiration for me personally. Whether it's classical, pop, rock or rap, there always seems to be some connection between the song and my personal situation. I'm sure most of you have had times when you've had a song playing in your head and it's been constantly nagging at you for not making a move on what you really want in life. So I try and listen to the lyrics closely and figure out if anything applies to me. If so, I follow the lyrics, if not I just move on with my life. But it's still good to analyze how successful people think and this is sometimes best done through music.
5. Ask for advice from someone you admire
You may not know it, but you have a mentor right under your nose! You probably have at least one person that you really admire in your life and would like to emulate their success. In fact, most people usually have more than one person they look up to in life. But it's important to pick the right person. For example, if you're a huge fan of an athlete and have spent hours every day watching their games and following all of their stats, then chances are you should be looking up to that athlete. But if they're not a sportsperson, then perhaps you should be looking at their life instead.
Please make sure your mentor is someone who has made something of themselves in life and is living the dream you want for yourself! You don't want to end up like me – a person who looks up to someone with no money, no job and no true success. My advice is to watch them for about 6 months, find what they're doing right (and what they're doing wrong). Then discard those aspects of their life and keep the ones that will lead you to success.
You can also turn to your parents or other elders in your family and ask them: "What is success to you?" I did this and they had some answers that I thought were really funny. One of my closest friends was raised in a religious family and his definition of success was a lot different than what it is for most people, but it really opened my eyes up to something new.
6. Read success books that you know very well
I remember when I was a kid sitting in my room with my grandmother and she'd just finished reading some horrible book about people who were saved by angels or a ghost. She once read me a story of a boy who found himself in the middle of the ocean after the ship he was on sank, but instead of panicking, he just sat there, calmed down and got to work building himself a raft. Amazing story! To this day I think everyone should be able to read that book and learn from it.
Conclusion
I hope these 2 tips will help you on your way to achieving whatever it is that you want in life. After all, we're all trying to be better than the people we were yesterday which is why we started our own business, right?
