6 Ways To Overcome Shyness And Gain Confidence

Do you feel shy and awkward when you are around people? Or do you fear that you come across as too standoffish or aloof? If so, these six tips can help you overcome your shyness and gain some confidence in your interactions with others.

1. Watch Yourself More Consistently. Get a good video recorder for yourself so that every time you interact with new people or accentuate different conversations, you can watch yourself over and over again to see where things went wrong. This way, when it comes to future conversations, the lessons learned from self-observation will be more readily available to reference in the moment of truth.
2. Be Authentic. Whenever you are around others, be yourself. If you are shy, embrace that fact and be comfortable with it. If you are too aloof or stand-offish, own up to your personal stance in life and deal with it. Don't pretend to be someone that you're not because if you do this often enough, it will become obvious to the people around you and they will lose trust in your ability to relate to them as a person.
3. Ask Questions. While some shy people have a tendency to speak less than others when in conversations, most of the time this is due to not having things of value or interest to say about themselves or their lives at that point in time. If you don't have things to say, at least ask questions of the other people in the conversation. You will not only appear more interested in them and their lives, but you will also be learning a great deal about them and what they are all about.
4. Think About What Is Important Before You Approach Others. Think about what is important to you in life, such as your family, faith or profession before entering a room full of people so that you can talk to them intelligently on topics that are truly important to you instead of avoiding those meaningful things or saying something that is not true about your life.
5. Seek Comfort, Not Approval. If you care what others think about you, then you are compromising your ability to be authentic and comfortable with who you are. People will appreciate and love you for who you are just like they would when they take the time to figure out a good friend or brother or sister!
6. Be Mindful Of Who You Are With And What You Are Doing. Try not to get too caught up in the environment around you, such as an exciting concert, party or sporting event so that instead of thinking about what is going on around you, you can focus on retaining positive energy within yourself and doing things that will help build your personal confidence.
7. Be Aware Of How You Are Perceiving People. To improve your social interactions, you need to view people as more than just objects of enjoyment to be toyed with. Realize and accept that everyone has a value and purpose in this world, even the ones who seem like they have nothing going on in their lives or are doing things that are difficult for another person to relate to or understand completely.
These are just a few ideas that can help you overcome shyness and build your own personal confidence by being yourself around others.
