We live in a world of material possessions. We want to be surrounded by the best, most premium brands and the new, cutting-edge gadgets so we can keep up with our friends. We change our phones for every season and get caught up in trends like buying a smart watch to stay in touch with friends on the go. In this post, I am going to examine why many people are not satisfied with just their material possessions; but they need something more than that.
What is it? The author has written about how people are not content or happy with just thinking they have a body--they need something more like "a soul. " This is a topic that has been written about in numerous books and articles, but here I will give you some quotes to further expand on what the author has written.
1 - By Your Own Admission, You Are Not Really Satisfied With Your Body
- "What kind of life would we lead if not for the body? What would we do with our free time? What would we think about? Would we be satisfied with a life of ideas and intellectual pursuits far removed from bodily needs?" - Pema Chodron, "When We Dead Awaken" (pg. 55)
2 - Our Bodies Are the Most Important Thing But we have a New Year's Resolution to Get Something More
- " We do not want more money or more status, or more any of the things that people around us seem to think they need. Our real goal is not material abundance, but genuine fulfillment." - Pema Chodron, "When We Dead Awaken" (pg. 55)
3 - The Things That You Enjoy the Most in Life Do Not Come From Your Body
- "If you want to be happy, it is possible to find joy in many different ways. You may be able to enjoy sex, but that enjoyment is not of your body; it comes from your mind. You can take pleasure in the food you eat, but that too is a mental enjoyment. You can enjoy the view from your window, but that too is not a bodily experience." - Pema Chodron, "When We Dead Awaken" (pg. 55)
4 - The Body Has a Number of Limitations and Restrictions
- "It's wonderful to have a body, but it has its limitations." - Pema Chodron, "When We Dead Awaken" (pg. 55)
5 - The Body Runs on Batteries but We Need to Plug In To Get Our Energy From Spirituality
- "The body runs on batteries, it is true, but if you do not plug in to the universe, you are drained." - Pema Chodron, "When We Dead Awaken" (pg. 55)
6 - You Are Not Truly Happy or Content with Life Unless You Have Something More Than Just the Bodies
- "Many people think that they are content with their existence if they have a life that is not too challenging and full of material comforts . . . They don't take time to ask themselves, 'Do I feel whole? Am I happy?'" - Pema Chodron, "When We Dead Awaken" (pg. 55)
So many more quotes could be included from this book. Some of the above are just a few examples and I encourage you to read the entire book for your own self-growth.
