If you are attempting to market your business online, you have a lot of choices to make and work. One of the biggest mistakes that we see marketers make is when they start promoting their website or blog without having a clear goal in mind. This can lead to losing site traffic from their efforts and ultimately low conversion rates. It will take some planning on your part but if you think about what kind of content people want, how long it might take for them to consume that content, and how it will drive them towards your goal (like subscribing for example), then you'll be able to determine an effective marketing strategy that works.
The challenge is that most internet marketers want to get something out there and start generating traffic to their site but don't know where to start or even why it's important. There are several reasons why it's important, so let's look at what some of those are.
First off, you need a clear goal. This can be a hard thing to do because your main goal may be something completely different than yours goals. What I mean is that people often have more than one goal when they first begin online marketing. Let's say they're trying to make money online and they have an affiliate program as well as an email list. Then they'll have goals set up to make money, build their list, and increase their rankings. While these are all great goals to have, they still need to be one single primary goal that you focus on first.
The next step is to create a plan. You need to define your target audience as well as what resources you'll use on your site and off of it. You might be looking at some type of blog or forum posting in the beginning but you have to start with something that's going to bring in traffic not just once but multiple times over time. If you post two updates a week at first, it won't result in much traffic. If you repeat that every single day it will be great but also too much work. Think of getting people to come back as a series of steps with your updates/posts leading up to the ultimate goal of getting them to subscribe or buying.
Once you've got a plan in mind and if you're using WordPress like we do then head over to the settings page and create new categories to start separating your posts into smaller categories. We use our three main categories "the zoo", "the farm", and "the forest" (aka the SEO stuff). This makes it easier to find the posts that we want to update so we can easily link to them. You can also add tags to your posts that people search for as well, or leave as none for a more broad audience.
Finally, you want to start with something original and interesting. Look at what others are saying and see if there's a new angle you can take on a topic. For example, if you're talking about pizza then talk about how much money your wife spends on pizza or get a funny video going to bring it off the typical "pizza" rant and get even people that aren't interested in pizza in general interested in your site.
The point is to have a goal and plan before you start. If you don't, then you'll find yourself getting frustrated with a lack of traffic or losing interest and giving up all together. It can be done but it takes patience and hard work. Hopefully this tutorial helps break the process down into a few steps to get your site started off on the right track!

The next step is to create a good SEO title and meta description for each of your pages. Create a SEO title by being descriptive but not spammy. Think about what a user might type into Google or another search engine to find the content on your page in order to get as much search engine traffic as possible. This also means that the words in your titles should be separated using dashes instead of spaces (e.g., "WordPress Plugin - My Plugin") and not separated using slashes or underscores ("WordPress Plugin - My Plugin").
