Despite the vast body of research on the harmful effects of negative thinking and how to overcome it, people continue to find ways to dwell on what’s going wrong. Think about it. Why do we dwell on bad news in the news? Or, why is it that we can spend hours worrying about an anticipated unpleasant event? We spend so much time focusing our minds on negativity when - in reality - there are more good things happening than bad things.
It's true that the majority of what happens in our lives will fall under one umbrella or another, either with positive events or negative events. But just by looking at those two words alone - positive and negative - you might be able to guess which is better for your mind...and your life.
Positive vs. Negative Thoughts: "The Winners" vs. "Loser" Mentality
One of the most important things you can do to change the way you think and feel about your life is learn to recognize the difference between thoughts that bring good results versus negative thoughts that don't serve any purpose at all. This is called learning to "think like a winner" versus thinking like a loser". Thus, by switching from negative thinking and mind-set to positive thinking and mind-set, you'll be able to achieve whatever it is you want in life - regardless of what circumstances or challenges face you.
A negative way of thinking, on the other hand, can have several negative impacts on your life:
"Think Depressing Thoughts" vs. Positive Thinking. The majority of people - especially "clicking-through-life" people - focus their minds on negative things that are going wrong in their lives at any particular moment. This is why we're not getting what we want, or why something isn't going our way. We've all been there...and it's not pretty...
I think we all have days when nothing seems to go our way. This is certainly common with people who are unemployed. The person may feel like she's doing everything she can to get a job...yet, after months of searching and sending out resumes, no one seems interested in her qualifications. Worse yet, the person might be thinking - I don't deserve to be out of work...or,...I'm a loser because I can't find a job!
So instead of spending time dwelling on things that are going wrong or dwelling on negative consequences regarding the "lack" part of the equation (i.e. lack of money, lack of a job, lack of relevant skills), focus your mind on the "win" part. Try focusing on what's going right for you in your life...and how you can improve upon things that are working out so well.
For example, I am writing this article from a hotel room in Kansas City, Mo., first class...with my laptop and high-speed Internet access. I'm in downtown Kansas City with an enjoyable view of the city's downtown core from my hotel room window. This is not a place I'd usually stay at - but this business trip has been particularly successful for me and I would have never thought my life would be turning out like this right now. I often think back to my days as a corporate manager, I thought I was living a mediocre life....but there are times when I look at my career change and realize that I was indeed "clicking through life" - but it's not all about the negativity. You see, there were times when things were good for me too. There are many things in my life that are working out in my favor right now...things that really do matter - like being able to write articles like this one while staying in a first-class hotel!
