Love the life you live.
Maybe that sounds like a cliché, but the beauty of sayings is that they are true. Life is full of uncertainty and trial and error, but at least there's no better way to learn from mistakes than when something goes wrong. Whether it's a bad breakup or someone else just not being interested in you for who you are, we all have moments where things don't go as planned. You can either dwell on these moments or take advantage of them to see what lessons are in store for us if we're willing to walk through this crisis with an open mind.
Every challenge isn't meant to be taken lightly. No matter how miserable something might make us at the time, it's still a learning experience for us to take any lessons from situations that seem like they're out of control. Whether it's a breakup or not being able to land a job, there is always some way we can benefit from the hardships we face.
And even when things go entirely without our consent, they will most likely turn into something in our favor if we use our time wisely.
With that being said, here are the top 20 lessons I've learned throughout my life:
1) The only constant in life is changes.
In life, everything will constantly be changing. There is no standing still. Life is a series of challenges. Some will come, and some may leave the experience with us, never knowing why we were even in that situation in the first place, but it doesn't matter because we will all make mistakes and begin to learn from them throughout the years.
It's a part of life meant to help us grow through these experiences. Instead of fearing these challenges, we should embrace them since they are here to teach us valuable lessons about ourselves, others, and what we're generally capable of doing.
2) Wherever you go, there you are.
This quote is a little weird, but that's just the point. For example, when we look at our past and think of what we used to be versus what we are like now, we tend to believe that the worst part of ourselves was in high school. And although it's slightly true because that was why you never want to go back to your old ways completely, other things remain consistent over time.
So wherever you go or whomever you're around doesn't change who you are. It may change your likes or dislikes, but it will never change who you are on the inside. You may have to change certain aspects of your personality, but you will always have the core of who you are in good times and bad. You'll learn how to deal with these situations by learning from previous experiences and developing a more mature mindset.
3) You are not alone.
Sometimes it's just impossible to take care of everything on our own. When we live an uneventful life and aren't made for the hardships that come along, it's easy to lose sight of all the support we could get from people around us.
Sometimes the little things prove to be the most crucial when dealing with even the biggest of problems. For example, if your car breaks down on a rainy night and you can't afford to fix it, a friend nearby might offer to give you a ride. It could be someone who doesn't even know you that much, but it's still something to rely on as long as it's not unrealistic in any way.
Or maybe there are situations where you need advice from someone older than you. There are countless instances where we can benefit from being around those with more experience and wisdom than us, proving why friends are significant.
4) Your past doesn't define you.
The past is the past. It's up to us to make sure we live for today, which means we can't be dwelling on what happened yesterday. We might make decisions that don't work out in our favor, but it's only a learning experience that will hopefully fuel our desire to change as a person.
Once you're confident in yourself and want to improve your life, there's nothing that can hold you back. Sometimes things won't go exactly as planned, and we'll deal with negative feedback from others, but just don't let it take over your entire life and end up being the defining factor of who you are.
5) Anything can happen.
The most cliché statements are usually the truest ones. Sometimes things don't go as planned. Sometimes we will feel like our lives are out of control, and it doesn't even make sense to what happened for our lives to go in this direction, but there's nothing we can do about it.
So when you let yourself worry about what could happen or focus on the negativity in life, you'll never stand a chance of reaching your full potential. Instead of focusing on the negatives, embrace what's good for you and work towards changing how you view everything as long as it doesn't end up a bitter experience.
After all, there is no more time to waste than right now. So take it from me, the best way to get through a difficult time is to embrace what you're feeling and to continue pushing forward because that's all you can do. Your situation will improve if you keep battling through these emotions.
And when it comes to our emotions, we can't control them. We must let them pass us by because it's impossible to stop thinking about what's inside its core without a mental breakdown.
As long as we take the good with the bad, there are thousands of lessons we can learn from our mistakes and remember for this lifetime and future ones.
So if you're having some trouble in life, calm yourself down and think back to the good times spent with someone you love or a good joke you think of.
Don't let everything that goes wrong in your life ruin the positive things you've done during your lifetime. Whatever happens, always remember that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
Your happiness matters, not the opinions of others who don't even know you. And if it's not working out for you anymore, then feel free to leave what's bothering you behind, even though there is no point in trying to fix something that isn't broken yet when it comes to something as insignificant as life.
But when it comes to our happiness, we can always make changes. It's not that hard of a concept.
Everything happens for a reason.
We will never know everything about our lives and the decisions we made in the past, but what we can do is learn from them and adjust as needed because it's not too late for us to start making changes towards bettering ourselves and our lives. We're never too old to realize what matters most in life and learn from these experiences, so keep doing your best and don't let anything stop you.
6) You're not a victim.
Sometimes we blame ourselves for things that go wrong in our lives because it's easier to blame ourselves than to admit that someone else might be at fault. We think, "If only I had done, then everything would be okay." But we must realize that it's never our fault if we're not happy with how we live our lives.
When people around us make bad choices, it is usually because they lack the knowledge and confidence to let go of their problems. They lack the mental strength needed to overcome their past and learn from them so they can move forward in life as new people.
If anything, we need to be even more compassionate towards these people so they feel better and can better themselves, especially when they're not ready.
If we don't want to be victims, we need to stop blaming ourselves and begin thinking of what we can do instead. It is one reason many people struggle in their lives; they're afraid that something terrible will happen if they change their ways for the better.
But maybe it's not about making changes for them. Perhaps they should work on changing themselves because that's something only they can do.
7) You are not your mistakes.
After a bad mistake, we blame ourselves for everything that has happened in our lives. We think it's okay to get depressed because of things we've done and not because everyone else is wrong to judge us for what we've done wrong.
But why should we blame ourselves if something wrong happens because of our mistakes? Why does it make sense when people around us continue judging our mistakes but then pat themselves on the back for being so mentally strong?
We're all human beings. We all make mistakes. We can't just expect everything in life to go our way, yet people are letting the errors we make define who we are as people.
People will always judge us for what we've done wrong or let our mistakes define who we are. But because of this, we need to put all that up in the air and take a step back to realize that what happened was something we did wrong, not who we are as a person.
We only have control over ourselves and how we live our lives rather than how others perceive us at this moment in time. We can only focus on ourselves because that's all we can do to get through the day, and at the end of the day, it's the only person you should be trying to impress.
8) You are what you make of yourself.
At this point, nothing is stopping us from achieving our goals and dreams. As long as we put in the hard work, we're on our way to reaching our full potential. If we don't give up too quickly and keep pushing forward until we get what we want in life, then there is no limit to how far we can go within our lifetime.
We don't need to satisfy others with what we do. We don't need to meet anyone at all because the only person we need to be happy with in life is ourselves.
The things we do might not always be the right thing to do, but that doesn't mean you should stop doing what you love or being whom you want to be in life. If anything, try doing your best and see where it takes you! It may lead you down a path that makes no sense whatsoever, but as long as you're happy, that's all that matters!
9) Stop apologizing for your choices in life.
It's not that we think we're perfect. It's not that we're entitled to do whatever we want simply because of who we are. It's not about being a jerk when you do something wrong, and it's not about being a sorority girl who wears crop tops because men can't keep their eyes off you.
It's about taking responsibility for what you've done in life and fixing it, so you don't repeat it in the future. We need to stop apologizing for our mistakes and mistakes from others because it allows them to continue making the same mistake repeatedly as if there is no other way for them to change or improve.
You made a mistake when you did an action in the past, but it does not mean you will continue doing that same action repeatedly. So stop making the same mistakes, and if something happens to repeat itself, then realize what you are doing wrong and get out of it before it's too late.
10) You are enough.
No matter how many times we fail or have let ourselves down in life, we need to stop believing that we're any less than great people. We may not always be able to see what others see when they look at us, but all that matters is how much value we can add to our lives through our actions.
We shouldn't be content with mediocrity because we need to constantly push ourselves to the top of the mountain that is life for things to get better and better.
It's never going to get easier if we're not willing to keep pushing forward and trying our best each time for something new and different.
Never give up because there are so many opportunities waiting for us, so why would we ever quit just because we failed once? Don't let anything stop you from reaching your full potential.
11) You don't have to be perfect.
Being perfect is an uninteresting thing to do in life. It's boring because we lose ourselves while trying to be perfect. It is not very interesting because we can't appreciate other people the way we want to because of our expectations.
Being perfect is a lie because it's an impossible goal that no one should ever expect us to reach. No one is perfect, and if they are, then they're not supposed to be there in the first place.
Perfection doesn't exist, and even if it did, it wouldn't do anything but make you unhappy while you're trying so hard to be just like everyone else around you who are already happy as they are.
So please stop trying to be someone else because you can't ever be them. Instead, work on becoming the best version of yourself and do things that make you happy.
12) You're enough.
Know that you are enough no matter what you've done or how many mistakes you've made in life. Life isn't about being better than anyone else; it's about being good enough for ourselves and living our lives to the fullest!
"I'm not going to live my life in fear or to impress other people. I will live my life for me, for whom I want to be, and for what I believe in."
- Miley Cyrus
There is nothing wrong with having a plan regarding your career or where you want to go in life. But you don't need to let other people's opinions get under your skin because of promises they've made and promises they still haven't kept.
And while it's essential to have goals and dreams that you're aiming for in life, you don't need other people's opinions about what kind of future lies ahead if only the answer weren't so obvious.
It's about making decisions that work for you and that you can be content with rather than living your life for someone else. It's never too late to change your life or follow your dreams, so why are you still waiting?
14) You don't have to be ave3rage.
If you haven't become successful yet because you're afraid of standing out, then that's a complete lie. If you're scared of not being average, why don't you stop doing things that make you moderate?
All that matters is that you do the things that make you happy and feel fulfilled in life one step at a time so that you don't feel as though anything should be done differently.
Stop comparing yourself to everyone else because no matter what others have done, many people have used their talents to better other people's lives. You have your way of living life, and no one can judge what makes you happy because if they did, they probably wouldn't be pleased in the first place.
15) Stop being a homebody.
We live in a world where we're often expected to be out at work or school and then come home to relax and catch up with our loved ones. But we also lead the most hectic lifestyles that it's almost impossible for anyone to be at home all day doing nothing.
So why don't you stop living your life this way? Instead, make sure you get out of your comfort zone, especially if it's something you've never done before, because you can learn so much from doing things you love. Not only will it make life more fulfilling, but it'll also help you develop new skills that will help boost your career later on.
16) You don't have to have all the answers.
Sometimes, we cannot remember everything, especially when faced with situations that make us feel helpless and confused. But that doesn't mean we need to look for the answers right away because it's a waste of our time and efforts when we can be working towards finding solutions to our problems.
Instead, do things that make you feel good about yourself, and everything else will follow. When we think about things too much, it only brings more stress into our lives.
17) Stop living in your parent's shadow.
We can't be anyone else but ourselves. We are who we are because of our experiences and the values instilled in us when we were a child. No matter how tough it is to live without your parents around you, it's never going to give you a great sense of independence if you're still trying to live for them by doing everything that makes them happy and leaving the things that make them upset.
18) Stop living in the past.
When we look back at things, we see our current lives and how much better they can still be if we didn't make so many mistakes along the way. But we have to know that dwelling on the past won't help us achieve our goals in life because it's all about living for the present moment and making things happen for ourselves so that we don't have to wait for things to work out in our favor.
Life is a cycle of moments that we get to experience over and over again. The past makes us who we are today, while the future creates a new experience that will bring us one step closer to achieving our dreams. So why waste your time being stuck in a place where everything will never be what you want it to be?
19) You don't need someone else's approval.
You might hear people say they want to marry someone who can give them all the love they never got from their parents. But while we all want acceptance, it's not a necessity in life. But if you're looking for someone else's acceptance of your decisions, you don't need them.
You do what makes you happy and do things that make others dislike you because it means that they won't have anything to do with you anymore and will be out of your life forever.
20) You're doing great!
Everyone has to learn from their mistakes. But if you're pleased with your life, you should have learned enough from your mistakes to know where to change the things that aren't working. And don't be afraid to try new things because it makes life interesting.
Conclusion
It's never too late to change the things needed in your life. If you think you've done something that could have prevented many heartbreaks in your life, then make sure you reflect on it because it'll only make a difference when you have learned from your past experiences.
If no one has ever told you what makes them happy in life, then maybe it's time that you ask yourself what makes you happy so that you can start working towards achieving those goals and dreams that will lead us to your kind of happiness.
Whether or not life is easy or hard for us is something we all need to experience. Don't let anyone bring you down for being who you are or for your decisions because it's your life. Don't live your life for anyone else but yourself; if you're not happy with yours, then make changes because no one else can live your life for you.
