A new six-level scale was introduced from 2014 to 2016 publicly in universities . The scale has the following levels:
= Low Preparation
= Mid Preparation
= High Preparation
The preparation of the startup and business idea is split at high level into two phases, "preparation" and "process of turning an idea into a business", which are rated on different scales. Students can rate the preparation using two definitions. As such, the rating is based on the individual's own interpretation:
The business idea is presented in various formats within ISB. The very popular format "business idea competition" where teams compete against each other at universities is also used for recruiting new students as well as for training coaches of these contests and other university staff.
During the first three years of introduction, the scale has been used to evaluate speed and quality of teams' preparation in business idea contests. These results have motivated the students to improve their preparation.
The preparation level scale has been used in more than 350 university business idea contests in more than 20 countries. The scale was also used for coaching students and for identifying innovators among them. The scale has also been applied by researchers for different purposes and at different universities (e.g. Maryland University). The business ideas with a high preparation level have started from 50% through to 80% success rate in competitions and this rate is increasing within time due to implementation of new ideas presented on ISB website www.global-ideas-bank.com.
The ISB website is described in the following manner:
The ISB Project is a global initiative to create an online library of business ideas, and provide additional tools that allow companies, researchers and students to use it efficiently. The ISB Project has two main elements:
ISB-A provides free access to the full text, images and audio of over 450 business ideas. In addition, ISB offers a suite of tools for searching the content and for filtering potential products or services using key words or other criteria. By providing access to ideas from all over the world, ISB increases awareness of this new asset among investors, managers, researchers and others interested in organizational creativity and innovative approaches to business problems.
The ISB-B function is to help potential innovators and entrepreneurs develop their business ideas into products and services that might be of interest to a variety of target groups. To assist in the preparation of business plans, ISB offers a set of tools for visualizing ideas, developing concepts and for estimating the impact that each idea might have on the market. ISB also provides services for disseminating business plans via syndication or direct contact between potential innovators and parties interested in innovative products and services.
The following three types of actions are needed to be completed within one month's time:
1) Prepare a business plan and fill in the information about the idea. This is completed within two or three weeks after completing the ISB-A form.
2) Post your business plan on the ISB website. The aim is to get an investment or find partners or clients who will buy your product (or service). This can be done in less than one week using syndication of an RSS feed based on your business plan.
3) Execute the business plan, i.e., start your new company, startup and/or change your job. The aim is to get a new job, the start-up can consider hiring you. This can be done within three months after completing the ISB-A form.
The ISB has been criticized for its lack of support for entrepreneurs and business owners who wish to "re-invent" their businesses or adapt theirs to changing markets.
Staff of ISB are located in the following countries: Sweden, Panama, United States, India, Japan, Mexico and Canada.
The latest round of funding was in May 2009 with a financing of 10 million USD led by Nordea Capital.
The ISB is privately funded through its own business programmes, donations, and participation in business idea competitions, where it provides the judging services.
The ISB, since its inception on November 1, 2003 has organized many business idea competitions at universities in the U.S., Europe and Central-Asia region. The contests were attended by thousands of students who made use of the power of innovation and creativity. By introducing new ideas to businesses around the globe, the ISB aims to develop public awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship in society as a whole.
