Title: One Woman's Story [ARTICLE START] By Greer Burns, Founder of The Caring Group Today I asked my friend Kristen to write a story about her experiences. I know she'll have an interesting perspective on the types of things women coping with breast cancer go through. It's not a topic that most people talk about…mostly because no one really wants to hear about it. But I think it's important to have an awareness of what women have to experience from the time they find out they have breast cancer until the time they die from it. Kristen agreed to write about her experience, and I'm so grateful for her contribution. Kristen says, "I am a 33-year-old wife and mother of three small children. Two and a half years ago I was diagnosed with stage III invasive ductal carcinoma. Reading that sentence gave me chills! It also made me sad because after I got over initial shock, I had no clue how hard breast cancer was really going to be on my life. My initial response was to go to my doctor, my oncologist, and any other specialist I could find because I was a BRCA1+ carrier. I received the news that I might not have much longer to live. The only thing that would make this okay would be if there was something they could do! It took a while for me to understand the true reality of breast cancer. My first few chemotherapy treatments were all in one month. Five treatments in three weeks? Impossible! My oncologist told me it was going to be okay; he put time frames on each chemo session and also seemed very calm about what lay ahead for me. I was still very confident in his abilities, so I did what I thought was right. When the time came for my 5th chemo treatment, I called for my first consultation with a local oncology surgeon. From the initial staff visit to the biopsy and reconstruction surgery (concussion), everything went smoothly. The next 6 months were hard but with each day went by, each other doctor appointment came closer to being over. The day I walked out of surgery was the one day that I knew that everything was going to be okay. The surgery was very minor and my scars were nothing compared to what they could have been. I had just finished my 6th month of diagnosis, and my breast reconstruction was right around the corner – it felt like I'd been in some kind of time warp. This time the surgeries, tests and appointments were all day-of-day surgeries, so at least I got to sleep in. Both surgeries went great, and I woke up in recovery with a brand new boob. The reconstruction was exactly like the first surgery except it took an hour longer. It was a little embarrassing because I didn't look at myself in the mirror for at least two weeks after the surgery. When I finally did go in, there wasn't much to see but tight wounds and gauze. My new breasts were smaller than I expected, but that's about it. It was hard to accept what my body looked like for so long, but eventually I moved on from the unknowns and accepted this is what my body looks like now.
Conclusion [ARTICLE END]
I really hope Kristen's story helps give other women a more concrete idea of what living with breast cancer is like. There are many lines to follow – you must fight the disease, but also think about the financial havoc it can take on your life. You have to think about the emotional aspect too – not being able to take care of yourself and your family is tough. You have to stand up for yourself and overcome a lot of obstacles, but please remember that you have people who love you. There are many new friends in every type of breast cancer support group on line; find them and talk about your experience.
