Unlocking Your Success: Finding Your Passion

Unlocking Your Success: Finding Your Passion

According to recent studies, approximately 80% of Americans are unhappy with their career. In fact, many are unemployed or underemployed and will never experience the satisfaction they require in their lives. The good news is that a career can be your own personal definition of success; one where you feel satisfied and fulfilled. So who exactly is going to unlock your success? Passion, that's who!

The purpose of this blog post is to provide insight into how you can find your passion by looking at 3 principles: things you do for love (or money); things you're good at; and stuff that inspires you.

Things you do for love (or money)

Think about the things that you absolutely LOVE doing. Some people are fortunate enough to have figured out such a thing from a young age. If not, it's never too late! It's important to understand that passions can change over time, therefore there is no harm in trying new things. The sooner we start this exploration process, however, the more likely we'll find our niche. To brainstorm ideas, consider writing down anything and everything that comes to mind. Try this for at least 5 minutes each day until you've come up with 10-15 activities or tasks. You are only limited by your imagination! Then, choose the top 3 things you're most passionate about and circle them on a piece of paper.

Things you're good at

Now that we have our passions picked out, let's move on to the next principle. Look for things that you're good at doing. There is truly no element of the world that you can't be good at! This might take a bit more thought, so once again it's helpful to generate as many ideas as possible. The objective is to create a list of both physical and mental strengths that match up with your passions. You should also identify any additional skills or traits that go along with the things you do well.

On the flip side, identify any things that you're not so good at doing. When coming up with this list it is helpful to keep in mind what you've been told and how you were trained as a child. If something doesn't feel right, don't bother! I can guarantee you there's better ways to spend your time than feeling inferior about an aspect of your life that was done to you since day one! Now, it's time to create a new list of things that you're good at doing. For this exercise, I recommend creating a new file on your computer since this might be where you end up spending most of your time. In the end you'll create 3 new document folders and if you're any kind of a geek, it's fun to name them after your passions.

Stuff that inspires you

This last principle is probably the most straightforward. By now you've identified both your passions and strengths, and we should have a pretty good idea of what activities or tasks we enjoy doing in our free time. What really shines through in this exercise is finding things that inspire us. Whether it be something small like a quote or something far reaching like an artist or poet; find things that leave you feeling inspired. A good way to discover this information is by taking the time to read magazines and blogs related to your interests (go ahead and bookmark them too!). Another way to discover inspiration is to open up your mind to the possibilities of exploring new and interesting things. Go ahead and try anything and everything that you find interesting. By now, you should have a wonderful list of things that inspire you!
